Subject: Original Quote?? From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 21 Jun 03 - 03:19 PM Here are a couple of quotes which I think are original to me - but am I paraphrasing someone else? 1. "I was a fan of Woody Guthie until I heard him sing." [ This is going to attract some flak ] 2. I'm not a fan of Hemingway, but I am a fan of the idea of Hemingway" |

Subject: RE: Original Quote?? From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 21 Jun 03 - 03:28 PM How you rate his singing should have no bearing on how you rate Woody Guthrie. I wouldn't worry too much about the other quote. It might not make it into posterity. |

Subject: RE: Original Quote?? From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 21 Jun 03 - 03:48 PM Good point! And I am a big fan of Woody's songwriting and socialist views.Interestingly, I bet not many people buy albuns these days " sound unheard". I bought Dylan's first album on the strength of P,P amd Mary's version of " Don't Think Twice". The shock of hearing " I don't why I love you... " for the first time was...well, he sounded to me like Lonnie Donegan on speed!!! |

Subject: RE: Original Quote?? From: alanabit Date: 21 Jun 03 - 04:38 PM I think Woody Guthrie was a good singer rather than a great one - and of course, he was no great shakes as a musician. However, I think relatively few people witnessed was he was really good at, which was the ability to really thrill people in practically any close up, spontaneous live situation. He was what I would call a busker through and through - and he must have been bloody brilliant at it by all accounts. I like his writing too. Oddly enough, when he met Bob Dylan, he rated the youngster more as a singer than as a writer. |

Subject: RE: Original Quote?? From: GUEST,Q Date: 21 Jun 03 - 04:45 PM Original? Hard to check out unless the phrases made it into some quotation collection. I sure as heck wouldn't worry about it. The one about Hemingway "sounds" familiar- or was it said about some other person? Or have I just read your posting twice? As I said before... |

Subject: RE: Original Quote?? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 21 Jun 03 - 05:27 PM The one who was a real fan of the idea of Hemingway was Hemingway himself. |

Subject: RE: Original Quote?? From: Gurney Date: 24 Jun 03 - 06:34 AM GuestQ, possibly the Hemingway quote you remember is about suicide. 'Taking the Hemingway out.' Just read it in an oldish novel (another oxymoron) and rather poor taste, I thought. |

Subject: RE: Original Quote?? From: Jim McLean Date: 24 Jun 03 - 06:43 AM Slightly off the thread but there is a pub in Madrid with the sign above it which reads 'Hemingway didn't drink here'. Jim McLean |

Subject: RE: Original Quote?? From: Jim Dixon Date: 24 Jun 03 - 07:59 AM Your first quote reminds me of: "Wagner's music is better than it sounds." (Often attributed to Mark Twain, but Twain was quoting Bill Nye.) |

Subject: RE: Original Quote?? From: JJ Date: 24 Jun 03 - 09:14 AM After a quick Google discovered a bunch of these, my favorite is, "I don't like naked mud wrestling, but I like the idea of naked mud wrestling." |
