A great song!! We (The Reivers) learned it from the Gaberlunzie record, and used to sing it with great gusto at Caledonian Society meetings and such. (Another candidate for the "Official Scottish National Anthem", if they ever decide to have one. But that was a thread about Flower of Scotland.)

We used the words as Balladeer has them except for the next to last verse where we sang;

The longbows of England and forty thousand horse,
Deadly and grim, fell upon the Scottish force.
Deadly and grim, still we sang our battle hymn,
"We shall die or be free," cried the Bruce.

The chords we used were slightly different, also. We used

Reiver 1 did all of our arranging (all I did was play the chords he told me to, and sing!) so I'm not sure how much difference this makes. It sounded fine to us using the chords above. I used a capo ("a most ingenious small engine" as a Chinese friend of Reiver 1 remarked) on the first fret, so actually sang in E phlat.

I'd like to get some comments on historical accuracy/inaccuracy of this song. (ie. did the English army actually include "forty thousand horse" (cavalry)? Did Bruce's men actually sing a "battle hymn"? What was it?

Very little really known about the battle. Even it's exact location is disputed (it might be under a housing development).

Thanks for the link. An interesting read, though it helps little in trying to learn the accuracy or inaccuracy of the song lyrics. My only source before this was John Prebble's "The Lion In The North". Prebble devotes several pages to the battle (including maps) but doesn't shed much light on the lyrics either.

He estimates the English army at 15,000 archers and spearmen and between two and three thousand mounted knights. That's a far cry from the "forty thousand horse" in my version of the song. He says nothing about the Scots (whose army he estimates at "no more than 500 light horsed riders, a few score Ettrick archers, and 5,000 spearmen or less")singing a "battle hymn" before the battle.

He does confirm your comment about the exact site of the battle, saying "...men still argue about the site of the battle, disputing its proper position by yards. It is now lost under the urban spread of Stirling, under roads, railway, farms, houses and pit-head, drainage schemes and timber clearance."

Scots' history from that time is very cloudy and I would say the only things that can be said to be uncontestable about the song are that a battle atook place near Stirling and the armies were on opposite sides of the Bannock Burn; that Bruce was the leader of the Scots and Edward the English; the Scots won against a superior force through the use of ground and that it all happened over two days in June, 1314.

Bear in mind that the winners usually write the history and it is in their interest to exagerate the size of the force that they beat. All I care about is that subsequently, Scotland was pretty much recognized as a nation (read the translation of the Declaration of Arbroarh and if you are from the USA, compare it to your constitution written by presbytereans some four hundred years later).

Oh and I forgot to mention the National Covenant, written in the 17th Century in Scotland as well.
