I first became aware of jazz flute through him. The flute is my favorite jazz instrument. I saw him perform at our university about 9 years back and he really rocked the place.

too many good people leaving us!

Yeah, what's with this lately?!?

I played clarinet when I was younger -- but really developed a taste for jazz flute from listening to Herbie Mann. I've got stacks of his vinyl. Never saw him in person, but heard him on TV back in the days I watched the box.

Another great gone.

Linn

Not every reed player but most who came along in the 60's and 70's wanted to emulate that particular tonal quality....not pure, but very breathy with a hard edge. Not so easy on flute as with other woodwinds where mouthpieces and reeds enter the equation.

Herbie Mann brought jazz from around the world and played it with his own tone and style.....and made it his......and made it great.

Always loved him..........

I think he started writing an playing music in his later years drawing on his own heritage, which was Middle European Jewish. If anyone could have produced a klez/jazz flute sound, it would have been him.

Herbie Mann -

    "HOLD ON, I'M COMING"

This man rocked my soul.

Move over Gabriel, you've got some company in the wind section
of the celestial orchestra.
