Subject: BS: Warm and fuzzy duck story From: SINSULL Date: 03 Jul 03 - 10:10 PM On my way to work this morning, the car in front of me stopped suddenly as did the one next to him to allow Momma Duck and her brood to cross the road. A truck was coming in the other direction. Frantic waving and flashing brights warned him to stop. Big old mean truck driver sat shaking his head and laughing. He honked the ALL CLEAR when the feathered train was safely on the other side. 4 lanes of rush hour traffic onn Broadway all came to a stop and everyone started their day with a smile. Warm and fuzzy in Portland, Maine. |

Subject: RE: BS: Warm and fuzzy duck story From: GUEST,pdc Date: 04 Jul 03 - 12:25 AM Nice story. In my city, this kind of thing is so common that streets located near water have "duck crossing" signs, with silhouettes of a mother duck followed by little ones. One of the nicest things around here (we're on the ocean) was when a mother otter crossed a road to where a house was being renovated, and settled herself in the basement, which was under construction, to have her pups. The house renovation was halted for several days (or weeks, can't remember now) until she moved her pups back across the road and into the ocean. Nice people! |
Subject: RE: BS: Warm and fuzzy duck story From: Billy the Bus Date: 04 Jul 03 - 01:29 AM Here on Stewart Island (NZ), our biggest avian road hazard are Little Blue Penguins - only after dark. They can be hard to avoid, as their colour matches a wet road. They also sometimes nest under houses, which can be rough, as they sing all night, with somewhat raucous voices. Years ago, a mate waited charitably until the chicks were fledged, then grabbed the parents, took them on his fishing boat to South Cape, about 25 miles away, and released them. They beat him home! However, my "Kindness to Penguins Award" must go to another fisherman, who found a bedraggled Little Blue when he staggered out the Pub door. He gathered it up, took it upstairs, and gently tucked it in the Publican's bed. "Fordley's" wife had not long left him, and the fisherbloke thought he needed a bird in his bed. The penguin must have enjoyed the new nest, for it snuggled down comfortably - until rudely awakened by "Fordley" finally 'hitting the pit'. Cheers - Sam |

Subject: RE: BS: Warm and fuzzy duck story From: GUEST,pdc Date: 05 Jul 03 - 10:43 PM To Gray D: That reminds me of one of the Top Ten Stupidest Questions asked by tourists at Banff National Park: "How do the elk know where the elk crossing signs are?" If you want the rest of them -- they're hilarious -- let me know and I'll post them. |
