Subject: BS: Eagle wins out over fireworks! From: Alba Date: 04 Jul 03 - 07:24 PM I just heard a great story on our Local News Station. Im sure most Folks know it's the 4th of July here in the USA. A lot of people have spent the day doing the usual stuff that goes along with this Holiday. Parades, Cookouts. Family Gatherings. Most Towns around the Country will hold a Fireworks display this Evening. Camden, Maine however have cancelled the Display that was scheduled there! Not because of Budget Cuts but because of a Young Eagle that is ready to take his first flight. Concerned Residents in the Town felt that the Fireworks, which are usually set off out in the Bay, may frighten, or worse, injure the Young Bird. The Eagles are currently nesting on Curtis Island out in the Bay. Camden is a very pretty Town and a Tourist spot. (it was the Town featured in the film "In the Bedroom").So there will be a lot of Tourists in the Town for the Holiday. It touched me that an Eagle's Welfare would be put before the Income from a usually very popular Fireworks Night. Sometimes Folks do the right thing and it is so good hear about it. Just wanted to share the Story! Happy 4th no matter where you are Catters:>) A |

Subject: RE: BS: Eagle wins out over fireworks! From: LadyJean Date: 04 Jul 03 - 09:33 PM Good for Camden Maine. You might be pleased to hear that the bird Benjamin Franklin suggested for the national emblem, the wild turkey, enjoys a sanctuary here in Pittsburgh. An otherwise unimpressive modern sculpture on Bigelow Boulevard has become a turkey roost. I'm certain there are idiots out there who would shoot them, if they could. But you can't stop on Bigelow Boulevard. There's no place to pull over. Who says turkeys are dumb? |

Subject: RE: BS: Eagle wins out over fireworks! From: Billy the Bus Date: 05 Jul 03 - 01:13 AM Good on ya Camden! Hope you get the 'wind beneath your wings' little eagle. If it's any consolation for firworks enthusiasts, my 4th July (yesterday) was 4" of snow .... Cheers - Sam in NZ |

Subject: RE: BS: Eagle wins out over fireworks! From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 05 Jul 03 - 07:06 AM Yay, Camden! I have an eagle-related July 4th story. I spend the early evening each 4th at the home of a lovely couple in their 80's- salmon, ice cream, good old New England fare. We sit on a long wide deck overlooking Mt. Monadnock. Bill, the host always reads the Declaration of Independance when all the guests have assembled. He's a former representative to the NH house, and a liberal Dem to boot, so there are lately significant pauses as he reads. During the reading my SO suddenly sighed and smiled. It wasn't until later that my SO told me that the local bald eagle had flown by during the reading - he was the only one not staring right at Bill, so didn't want to break the mood or interrupt Bill. (Then Bill blasts his cannon and my SO plays his bagpipes, so the mood got broken anyway, but at the appropriate time!) |
