Subject: Whitby Folk Week 16 - 22 Aug 2003
From: alanww
Date: 07 Jul 03 - 05:55 AM

Whitby Folk Week was certainly very good last year. I am thinking of going - "that's a bit late to book accommodation" you might say - well yes it is!

Hence I would be interested to know who else is planning to go and whether anyone has any spare beds or floorspace in a house/flat in town which they would be willing to let out to myself and my girlfriend, Sandy? Well you never know ...

"Come fill up your glasses and let us be merry ...!"

PS I am just off to Latvia for a week to dance at the Baltica 2003 festival with the Chameleonic Morris Men but I will be very interested to see any responses when I return!
"Dancing and singing, bell ringing ...!"

Linda and I hope to be around for some of the Whitby sessions this year. We've booked our caravan in one a site near Staithes, so we'll only be along the coast.

Noreen - rabbit hole has kids and mother in it - since its mothers rabbit hole - he can fight for it if he wants but believe me the noise at 6.00 am when you only got to bed t 3.00 is not worth the fight!!

Well, yes I did get to play for Chameleonic Morris men, who danced for the President of Latvia and 5000+ others, and I was interviewed on Latvian TV ...
Anyway, I guess the lack of response while I was away either demonstrates that:-
1 everywhere is full up OR
2 nobody likes me ... *Boo hoo!*

If anyone in the bell-ringing fraternity is going to Whitby I would dearly love to grab the tower. PM me please. But sadly I will only be there on the Thursday & Friday - some of us have day jobs to help pay the fishmonger's bill(& Greedy cat!)

I missed Whitby last year but am going this. I gather last year they used a different campsite but are back at Stakesby School now. Anyone know whether they've finally replaced that dangerous contraption laughably described as a shower hut? The one with the water swilling around the electric pumps on the floor?

So if you see leaving me a maritime session or a singaround early, you'll know I'll be hotfooting it back to Saddleworth!! (Complete with hot water and towels of course!!)

See you all there,

Anyone brave enough to suggest to Malcolm that the Whitby programme (like the Sidmouth working programme)lists the artists at the end with the programme numbers of the events at which they'll be appearing? Or would that make the programme too expensive?

I'll be there too. Looking forward to the slow english sessions with George at The Middle Earth and the lunchtime soggy songs at the Endeavour.
Where is the best place to join in slower "not very Irish" sessions in the evenings? I've got nothing against the Irish (having just come back from some excellent craic over there) but their tunes have too many notes and they're too close together for me :-))

Sadly the caravan was not for sale, thus we are still reduced to staying in our existing caravan (though cheese and wine may be a knightly event) The canvas mansion will reappear at some stage later in the summer and is not for sale

Cheese and wine will happen at the castle annexe (otherwise known as our caravan) on at least one, if not more occassions during the week. Of course you may attend Lady Rabbit, provided there's none of that hand holding lark with my lord raggy again!!!!! Further details will bew published when the good knight and I communicate later today.

My Dear Lords & Ladies, Lord and Lady Bulstrode de Wraggetache of Kirklees would like to entend an invitation to the very select few to attend a Pig Roast Supper (BBQ) at our domicile in the fair sea port of Whitby on Monday the 18th in the month of August in the year of our Lord MMIII. (Weather permitting)

Other than that we could all hike off down to the beach one evening, armed with throw away barbie, bottles and bottles of beer wine and spitrits and light a big fire and all dance round naked in a drunken stupor ...........................Ooops there I go again.

I bet I know which one the Rabbit goes for !

the trouble with the beach is sand gets every where!!

Perhaps My lord Raggy you and your good Lady could act as witness to MCFAT and I as we renew our vows - neither of remember saying any at Beverley - neither did we have Stag/hen do or reception or wedding pressies so we thought since we are supposed to be married we had better try to sort some time out and get on with it and then we can get on with the not speaking to each other bit!

Lord Raggy hast thou been defeated I notice the dropping from your Title of West Yorkshire and the North of England - is there another pretender to the throne?

Hertfordshire Garland was the original idea.

It looks as though it's going to be a great week for workshops.

We'll be running harmony and performance workshops Monday to Thursday at Whitby Mission Hall between 1.00-2.20
They'll lead up to a performance on Friday 1.15-2.15 at The Resolution Club of a new words and music production -

'The Toilers' Gift: Collecting Folksongs in Yorkshire'

which brings together some lesser known traditional Yorkshire songs and the stories of the people who sang and collected them.

Ossenflags, I was in the very establishment last night talking to the Landlady about our visitation on Sunday of Folk Week, the pub has altered a little and is not as big as it was, so we will enjoy cosier setting than we did, but the welcome will be there and with good company provided by ourselves, it once again should be a rollicking afternoon. Train about 12.30 from Whitby arrives just after 1.00 in Glaisdale, train home just after 4. I will check the exact times beforehand, the office was closed on both Friday and Saturday when I went this weekend

Getting excited now. Let me see: concertina, cider tokens, songbook, hip flask, Tallimore Dew, Mudcat Tshirt, Fisherman's Friends, more cider tokens, Captain Morgan's spiced Rum, bell pads, hankies, sun hat (but I hope it won't be as hot as Sidmouth!) and perhaps some extra cider tokens. Oh and not forgetting Sandy and her mandolin ...

BTW What are the decent pubs for cider, preferably where there is an easy-peasy English tunes session going on at the time?

Tap and Spile usually has some sort of Scrumpy on and we could always start a session in the main bar! I will bring my borrowed concertina and see if I can throw the odd note in - maybe even some correct ones. Lunchtime around 1pm is often a good time for that sort of session before the big crowds gather.

Mrs Duck,

Am intrigued by several references to your melodeon recently on mudcat. Have you lost it, had it stolen, sold it or what?

On the subject of gentle melodeons on Saturday and Sunday, are you sure it's Robin Garside who's running them at Middle Earth, as it's usually George Garside who does them.

Whoever it is, look out for me there as I enjoy that sort of thing as you probably know.

Perhaps you can update me on your melodeon saga there?

Flaj.

Verses To Celebrate The Arrival Of Andreas And Antonia At The Festivities In Whitby

As I came down to Whitby town,
Hooray! Hooray!
As I came down to Whitby town,
Hooray! Hooray!
As I came down to Whitby town,
I heard a sound and I looked around
It was MudGuard's wheels going round and round
Oh! Andy, we hardly knew ye.

With your beard and gears and gears and beard,
Hooray! Hooray!
With your beard and gears and gears and beard,
Hooray! Hooray!
With your gears and beard and beard and gears,
The mountains never slew ye.
Come here my dear, and have some beers
Oh! Andy, we hardly knew ye.

As through Whitby town I went,
Hooray! Hooray!
As through Whitby town I went,
Hooray! Hooray!
As through Whitby town I went,
I heard someone fiddling with intent -
The music it was heaven sent!
Antonia, we hardly knew ye!

With your diddle and fiddle and fiddle and diddle,
Hooray! Hooray!
With your diddle and fiddle and fiddle and diddle,
Hooray! Hooray!
With your fiddle and diddle and diddle and fiddle,
The moors and the fells never slew ye.
So dance to the fiddle and meet in the middle,
Antonia, we hardly knew ye!

So now we're gathered in Whitby town,
Hooray! Hooray!
So now we're gathered in Whitby town,
Hooray! Hooray!
Now we're all gathered in Whitby town,
We'll sing till we bring the ceiling down
And make the valleys ring with sound!
And raise a great hullabaloo yuh!

With our songs and tunes and tunes and songs,
Hooray! Hooray!
With our songs and tunes and tunes and songs,
Hooray! Hooray!
With our tunes and songs and songs and tunes,
The Catscratch Band'll play to ye,
We'll dance by the light of the harvest moon,
And raise a great hullaballo yuh!

Have a lovely time boys and girls!!!

I guess most of you will be there at the festival anyway so will miss this, but I'll just mention that we (Mary Humphreys and Anahata) are replacing Eileen McGann in these two events:

Concert Thursday afternoon in the Rifle Club 3-5 pm
Concert Thursday evening in the Albion Club 7-11 pm

We'll be whizzing up from Cambridge on Thursday morning so it looks like it will be a busy day!

This is SOOOO unfair!!! I'm reading all these messages and we should be there!! Because of losing so much work last week ( our new grandson arrived early!) I'm having to pay some back now!

Oh well, only 28 hours to go before we can set off!

Hope the Silver Street Mob aren't drinking ALL the alcohol!!

Back after brilliant weekend. Unfortunately brid widder has to work. Tap & Spile has become a temporary home for mudcatters, never seen so many in one dis-organised place. To name a few Alanww, Partridge, Vectis, Geoff & Mrs Duck with ducklings, MCFat, Red & White Rabbit, Dave Bryant, Noreen, Mudguard, Linda Kelly, Herga Kitty, Willa, Old Git, Les from Hull and Maggie, Judy Knight and little legs Padgett plus others wearing badges and T-shirts that I dont know. Mudcat might be a bit quiet for a week or so.

Stewart

Just a passing visit home from Whitby which feels odd. Had to drive back to pick up son's GCSE results and guess what - school closed ten minutes before we got there so I have driven 160 miles today for nothing!!!! Having a brilliant week - bought a new concertina - seen so many people friends old and new. Off to set off for the return journey and find a beer or ten!

Just back home too - But not going back till next year.

Anyone wondering what all this is about invest £3 in a 2004 programme when it comes out. I will be surprised if you don't then go :0)

Wonderful sight in the craft fair today. Alistair Anderson test driving a concertina for one of the teenage girls to buy.

.... and by the way - Sam Smiths old brewery bitter hand pulled at £1.27 a pint in the Plough. Even the CO-OP couldn't beat that!! Is this the cheapest beer at a folk festival anywhere ?

Back properly now - head still swimming with all the highlights of the week - singing on deck of the Grand Turk then drinking till 2am with the crew (thanks for the Jamesons Ken x), playing tunes on a religious tract with the Scratch, chatting up and kissing pirates and sailors ah so many fond memories. Must go back next year!

Spirit of Caedmon: thanks for that song about me (and Antonia)
As I met so many "new" Mudcatters - did we actually meet? (sorry, my memory is not the best...)

To all the Mudcatters in Whitby (and to all the other people there): thanks for lots of wonderful music!
And for not running horrifiedly out of the Tap and Spile when I started singing... ;-)

Well I finally got home after surviving another Whitby (we had a 'survivors session' in the Black Horse on Saturday night). Maggie and I had a great time (again). I'm trying to tell my liver that it's going to be another year till things'll be that bad again but with Hull Shanty Festival coming up I don't think it's going to believe me.

Thanks to all our friends for their music and company (it would be impossible to name everybody here). See you all next year, or at other places in the meantime. I'd like to some of the photos that people seemed to be taking eventually.

Les

A wonderful and very energetic week! Played tunes with the Strawhead Tyrants, sang with Jim and Georgina Boyes' Yorkshire group and heard some great music and singing in the evening concerts.
I saw most of the catters Beardy mentioned, plus Oombanjo and Sheila, Treaties1, Nutty, James Berriman, Sam Pirt, Bill Sables, Jellybeam, Bassic, Col K and others I recognised but couldn't put names to.

For all those who met Antonia, we have just returned from a night out in Hebden Bridge with her and the people she is staying with. She is fit and well (considering her week in Whitby) Next stop Edinburgh and then London before her flight home on the 2nd of September. Don't be too surprised if you see her Whitby 2004.
She sends her thanks to all the many many people who she met during her stay in Whitby

Just wondering if anyone else got caught by the estate agent who decided to let out cottages without checking if current residents wanted to rebook. We have had the same cottage for a couple of years but when we tried to rebook were told it had already gone but were offered an alternative which we accepted. However it appears that the people there had had that cottage for about 5 years running and were furious when they found it had been booked by us and insisted the owner be contacted and he said they should be allowed to book and so we were once more without anywhere for next year. We hope we have now found something but it is not exactly what we would have wanted but I had heard from others that we were not the only ones caught like this.
BTW if you are reading this Trish - no we don't want to upset your booking but I pointed out to the agents concerned that they had gone against what has been standard practice over many years in Whitby for folk week and next year people booking with them should be given fair warning when the cottages are to be relet and given the chance to be first in line.

I too would be interested in how many got 'stung' by the agents. As Mrs Duck knows, I asked them on Monday about re-bookers but was brushed off. The irony is I'd gone in asking if our last year's berth was available (we'd come in at the bottom of the chain in a newly let property but then the owner decided to live in it, so we were 'squatting' this year) That wasn't available but I was given a list of those which (allegedly) were. What's a girl to do?
Jane, if the new place is really unsuitable PM me and we'll see if we can sort anything out. I thought Geoff's theory has some mileage, that the prices were being hiked to such an extent they were perhaps opening up to a free-for-all in the hope of diverting attention.

Re re-booking cottages - I've heard that there was a new guy at Astin's who was taking bookings during Folk Week on a first come first served basis and was unaware that existing bookers (no, I don't mean Johnny...) were supposed to have first claim. The person I heard from has managed to get his booking back, because he contacted the owner who told Astin's he would no longer use them unless they reversed their decision to let it to someone new.

I've already re-booked my B&B for next year!

Kitty

WOW what a great time I had this year.
Tap N Spile nights were good fun, nice to see so many catters as well as other folks that I don't normally meet up with. Sorry I had to miss the last night but Bridgnorth called.
Wasn't the singing on the Turk lovely? My liver still recovereth.
The afternoon music sessions were a brill idea. I really enjoyed them. I've got a huge long list of tunes to learn by Whitby 2004.
Looking forward to next year already.
See y'all then
Mary

Our problem is that the house we've been in for 2 years holds 11 very comfortably, and is so handy opposite the Albion Club, but it's been sold! The one they've offered us only holds 8, so we have a problem for next year!

The high for me at Whitby was joining the "cast of thousands" for the Strawhead production - wonderful!!

Camping etc. is always a possibility but beware the dangers in walking up the 199 steps, after dark, to those sites beyond the abbey, and therefore the church.. Took that walk about three times, latish-on. Each time I heard a tapping from the graveyard that surrounds the church. On the third night I just had to find out what it was. On rounding the church corner I espied a huddled up grey figure at a headstone. On approaching I saw it was an old chap. He had a mason's hammer in one hand and a stone chisel in the other. "Eh what's tha doin' lad?" I enquired. "Silly buggars spelt me name wrong." came the reply. I left, rapidly.

Sadly Kitty I suspect the people you referred to are the ones who had the cottage we had booked. We now have another booked up the steps from the Middle Earth so should have a good week but its a hell of a way to get kids up to the West Cliff school for 10am! We will all have a brilliant time though if this year is anything to go by! See everyone soon.
