Mark Sheridan (1867-1918) made the song famous. A recently issued CD of Sheridan recordings includes his 1909 version of 'Seaside'- Music Hall Masters MHM011 from Julian Myerscough, 7 AlexandraRoad, Lowestoft NR32 1PH.

The first chord of Oh I do Like to be beside the seaside is an augmented chord. Whenever I'm trying to identify the chord in a song. I use OIDLTBBTS as an aide memoire.

Yes - they're a "thing unto themselves" Quite enjoyable but sort of apocryphal to the canon. More important than the story divergences is the fact that the characterizations of H&W are nothing like Doyle's characters.

As a bit of a Holmsean myself, I must say that, having read the entire canon, some of it several times, and heard/seen much of it in radio and tv adaptations, the Rathbone films are a bit of a joke. Most of them are "based on the characters created by ACD", but with invented stories not based on the originals. They fall into that genre of "so bad they're good"; very entertaining, but only of value as curiosities to the true Baker St buff.

Does that sound a bit arrogant? Good!

Ed - not exactly a Baker St. Irregular, but I do enjoy the Great Detective. Especially the middle years of the Brett series - best damn Sherlock on film.

Anyone got a tune to go with the verses? Its one of those songs that everyone knows the chorus and the rest has slipped out of use but it could be fun.

It's a music hall song, which is a legitimate genre in its own right. No problems with crossover, I hope? And don't forget, even traditional songs were written ("created" if yo prefer) by someone originally; not by pros, of course. A folk song is a song they'll let you sing in a folk club. It took me about twenty years to suss that out!

Any song's a folk song, so long as people sing it themselves. Perhaps you mean "traditional song".

I sing Norwegian Wood and, when I sing it, it's a folk song.

Is "I do like to be beside the seaside" a British Folk song?. Then God help us.I don't think so. Especially as it was written by a pair of professional songwriters. It's a jolly song for the singing and it is ingrained in the memories of a vast number of UK people, but Folk song ? Nah... you might just as well call "Can't buy me love" a folk song.
