This may be a long shot, but I was wondering if any of you UK Mudcatters are into live roleplay. I'm going to be at the Gathering in August and if any of you are going to be there too, it might be fun to get together.

Just curious,
Lana

He refers to Lead Replacement Petrol, the replacement for 4-star. I did LRP for about a little while, Lana, in my younger days, but (like many) decided it'd be far more fun to learn how to use *real* weapons, instead of poncing about with rubber swords. ;) For the last decade, I've been a re-enactor. As to the gathering, never heard of it (sounds far too much like a card game!), so put me down as a no! ;)

hehe, sorry, i don't seem to be making any more sense. :-)
The Gathering is the huge live roleplay event that takes place near Derby every year. It's run by a group called the Lorien Trust. Happens over the Bank Holiday weekend in August.

as for what live roleplay is...it's a bit difficult to explain, i always get strange looks when I try to explain it as historical reenacting only not historical. If you've heard of Dungeons and Dragons, then you've heard of table top roleplay. Live roleplay is basically the same, except you dress up as a character that you've created and react and act according to the plot that has been written by someone else. This is a terrible explanation. One of my friends explains it as similar to the murder mystery dinner parties. I don't know if this helps at all. sorry.

How can you dress up as petrol? I can't even do an impersonation of a petrol can! I can do an impersonation of Geoff the Duck, but I'm not dressing up as him - he's much thinner, and the trousers would cut me in half! I could impersonate El Greko, or Leadfingers, but people would soon notice the lack of talent! Why do you have to dress up? If you dress up, and someone else writes it, why don't you call it acting, or improvised acting? Why am I so stupid? I thought roll playing needed a pianola!

yeah yeah, improvised acting it is. kind of like the lord of the rings.

I thought of the petrol too, so I just had to have a look. I figgered it probably wasn't.

So can I dress up as my car? It takes LRP. I have a pane in my back too from sleeping on a bad bed and I'm tyred and exhausted.

Seriously though, we used to have a show in Oz called Theatre Sports, which sounds something like what you are describing, only without the dressing up or the petrol............

My son and his mates use to go to the gathering. If I am acting as unpaid bus-driver (again!) this year I will let you know. I won't be larping myself but have been nearly convinced to be an NPC bard on occasions. Till they heard my singing...;-)

Cheers

Lana : Might these people get hot enough for freshly squeezed lemonade? Can you let me know the name and address etc., of the organisers?

Sal

Sal- it's entirely possible, they do have a bunch of food and drink booths that do very well. you can email the organizers at enquiries@lorientrust.com. They should be able give you the information you need.

Dave the Gnome! How are you doing? i've got my own driver in the form of my boyfriend, but if you ever do decide to go and bard it up, let me know! The music usually pretty good, the bards i know tend to roam around the camps at night preforming and getting lots of free drinks. :-)
