That last verse reminds me of a morning when I really didn't want to get up, but (having to go to work) forced myself to leave my warm, comfy bed, reluctantly washed and shaved and got dressed. About to go downstairs and at last looking forward to a coffee, I woke up - and had to do it all again, for real.

Just Sing the Blues

1. Well, I woke up this morning, there was gravel in my bed,.
Gravel in my throat, gravel in my head,
Got out of bed, there's gravel in my socks and shoes,
Gravel in my underpants, so l suppose I’ll just sing the blues

2. Well, when you got the blues,
It kind of makes your voice go down low,
This ain't the Beach Boys, honey, even if you play 'em real slow
Can't allow no note of cautious optimism to lighten the bad news
This ain't no clinical depression, this it the blues

3. I don't know where I gottem, maybe that guy who sneezed all over me,
Maybe watching the Jeremy Kyle Show, or listening to a Leonard Cohen CD
I just know I gotten bad, drive me to cigarettes and booze,
Ain't no light at the end of the tunnel, crawl out of bed and play the blues.

4. Blues in the morning, blues in the pm, blues in Eastenders, blues at half past ten,
l even get up in the middle of the night, set the alarm for half past two,
It ain't cool to be happy, so I’ll just play the blues.

5. I got me this woman, she took me to this symphony,
It had more than 3 Chords, more than 12 bars, that's all too much for me,
Can’t get turned on by all those preludes and fugues;
Scarlatti and Vaughan Williams, they don’t sing the blues.

6 Got me a woman, even more crazy then the last one l tried,
Took me to this film called “The Sound of Music”, but I could not be satisfied,
AII about this stupid nun climbing mountains, and a spoonful of sugar from that Julie
Andrews,
Bet she never shot no man in Memphis, and she don't sing the blues.
.
7. But Hey, l woke up this morning, found I'd grown a great long beard,
My waistline had expanded, it was far worse than I'd feared,
I'd turned into a folksinger, which is not what I'd choose,
With your finger in your ear, it’s hard to sing the blues.

8. Well after this Kafkaesque experience, it took me a while a while to adjust
You can't sing the blues when you're improperly dressed.
Suppose I’ll have to sing a Child Ballad, or play a few Morris tunes, ,
lt's an inadequate substitute for 30,000 volts through the testicles,
That’s what you need to sing the blues.

9. Well as I walked out one morning, all in the month of May,
l spied a fair young maiden, to my wack fol diddle aye day,
She said 'I'm searching for my maidenhead, which I've managed to lose,
This ain't really the raw material if you want to sing the blues.

10. Well we went searching for that maidenhead, we bonny labouring men,
Along with that bold sea captain; it was like looking for a contact lens, . . . . . .
I thought 'bugger this for a game of conkers, I've got better things to do”,
Stuck on that delta in High Germany, ain't no place to sing the blues.

11. Well, I leaned my back against an oak, thought it was a trusty tree,
Yeah, leaned my back against an oak, thought it was a trusty tree,
But first it boughed and then it broke, I fell back into the shite and got soaked,
Then l woke up not totally amused,
You can't really see the funny side when you got the blues.

12. So it had all been a dream, I hadn’t woken up this morning at all
I only thought l woke up this morning, but it was a false call,
But now I'd really woken up this morning, thank goodness for that, phew!!
I’ll get me coat pick up me guitar and play the blues..

...or something like that

Woke up this morning, sun was in the east.
Woke up this morning, sun was in the east.
Ge-e-e-e-ts monotonous, to say the least.

-notonous is a triplet.

Here's Martin Mull, turning a three-line parody into a six-minute comedy sketch.

PoppaGator,

My friend Ted and I did Martin Mull's song at a Cobourg show about 20 years ago. Since it was so short, we added two more verses, but ended with Martin's. I have no idea where the other two verses came from, but they fit nicely. We called it The Yuppie Blues.

Ever since my baby left me, I just don't know what to think
Yes ever since she left me I don't know what to think
Guess I'll have another Valium and go and call my shrink.

I took my BMW down to the tune-up stand
Yes I took my Beemer down to the tune-up stand
I said, "Check the fuel injection, Pleeeeease Mr. Tune-Up Man.

I woke up this afternoon, found that both my cars were gone
Yes I woke up this afternoon and both my cars were gone
I got so doggone mad I threw my drink across the lawn.

The sun's gonna shine in my back door some day.
[louder] I SAID, the sun's gonna shine in my back door some day.
You can tell by that, I got the North-Facing Front Door Blues.

Wendell Ferguson sang something like:

When you sing the blues, you always repeat the first line,
Yah, when you sing the blues you always repeat the first line,
That's what makes the blues so easy, you only have to think of one rhyme.

If you wanna play the blues you only have to know three chords,
Yes to play the blues you only have to know three chords,
(Fumbles around making an awful noise, then sings)
I guess I'll have to learn one more.

In full if you want it!

SICK MAN BLUES
(Oddie)

I woke up one morning, feeling so sick I thought I was dead (Oh yes I did)
I felt sick in my stomach and I felt sick in my head (Oh yeah)
So I rolled over on my pillow, and I threw up all over the bed
(You did, I know you did. You hear that?   I heard that)

I turned round to my wife, and I threw up all over her (Why you do that?!)
I threw up on the cat, and I threw up on the baby's chair (All over the chair)
Now five years I've been travellin', and I've thrown up everywhere!

I've thrown up in California, thrown up in Timbuktu
Now come on over here baby and I'll throw up over you!
Throw it up, throw it up, up up [blech], throw it up, throw it up, up up [bleah]
Oh Lord I'm tellin' you, I got those sick man blues
(I'll tell you a little bit more now)

Well I've thrown up over Indians, I've thrown up over Jews
I've even thrown up on my blue suede shoes
Throw it up, throw it up, up up [blech], throw it up, throw it up, up up [bleah]
Oh Lord I'm tellin' you, I got those sick man blue … ooooooh … [bleah … bleah … bleah!]
(Better out than in, man!)

Hey, my verse is historically accurate

Woke up this morning, they was grinding trees
Eight o'clock in the morning, they was grinding trees
Cat licks my face, saying "Feed me mama, please."

Reminds me very much of a *different* blues parody, by Martin Mull. I only remember the first verse (I'm not sure that there are any additional verses!), and have posted it before in a thread about "New Age Blues" or "White Man's Blues" or "Suburban Blues" or some such...

I woke up this afternoon / And I saw both cars were gone.
I woke up this afternoon / And I saw both cars were gone.
I felt so sad and lonesome / I threw my drink across the lawn.

And if I wake up tomorrow,
Then that'll be three in a row.
