Subject: Lyr Req: All of It From: Celtaddict Date: 25 Jul 03 - 10:11 PM I have heard a song in New Orleans sung by the wonderful Betsy McGovern called "All of It" which has several verses. One involves a server who is shorted in her tip and thinks the customer should have left all of it. One involves a sick man given a medicinal bit of whiskey who wishes to have all of it. One involves the young couple in the next apartment who at night sings the chorus which is the same for each verse:
Not just a bit of it. None of your quarters, your thirds or your halves, The long and the tall of it, Rise and the fall of it, All of it, all of it, all. |

Subject: Lyr Add: All of It From: Sorcha Date: 25 Jul 03 - 11:31 PM All of It 1) Oh, dear what's the matter they're row'in and squabble'in There seems to be something a rye For the last forty nights, they've been having a fight And we always can hear the same cry Chorus: Give me all of it, all of it, not just a bit of it, None of your quarters, your thirds, or your halves For the long and the tall, and the rise and the fall of it All of it, all of it, all. 2) The Priest at the alter was noticed to falter And he seemed to be weak at the knees When the Deacon poured drops of red wine from his cups We could make out his virtuous pleas 3) The fiddler was play'in below in the kitchen In the wee after hours that are best When he left out a beat in the turn of the reel And the dancers all stopped to request 4) The barman was spilling, and wiping and spilling And the drinkers discussed this and that When his thumb in the measure he aroused their displeasure And he brought this response from one pat. 5) Now I've not the gumption nor hard neck to finish This songs nothing less than obscene But I trust your good taste, and I know you won't waste Yours and mine precious time if you scream Wouldn't let me copy the address......it's the html page of an Adobe Acrobat page. |

Oh, dear, what's the matter? They're rowin' and squabblin'.
CHORUS: Give me all of it, all of it, not just a bit of it,
The Priest at the altar was noticed to falter
The fiddler was playin' below in the kitchen
The barman was spilling, and wiping and spilling
Now I've not the gumption nor hard neck to finish |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: All of It From: Celtaddict Date: 26 Jul 03 - 12:04 AM That is it! Thanks! Quibbling with the site's transcriber, surely the second line ends "awry" as in something wrong. She sings the verses in a different order, fiddler, barman, waitress (who is not here), priest, then the couple last, with the opening line of their verse something about the neighbors, upstairs perhaps. Do either of you helpful folk know who wrote it or when? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: All of It From: GUEST,Betsy McGovern Date: 19 Dec 10 - 07:46 PM I don't know if anyone is still looking for this. I am astounded to see my own name! I learned the song from a Skylark album, and the reason you couldn't find that verse about the waitress was that I made it up to encourage our customers to tip the waitstaff in O'Flaherty's. So here is what we used to sing: The barmaid was filling and wiping and spilling While the drinkers all guzzled and sipped When the man paid his check and he took back his change She had this response to his tip. Give me all of it, all of it, etc. This is so funny. In my "old age" I have been trying to record the lyrics of my repertoire because sometimes I forget them!! So, I don't know if anyone cares 7 years later, but there it is. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: All of It From: Jim Dixon Date: 21 Dec 10 - 08:12 AM Skylark recorded ALL OF IT on their album "All of It" (Green Linnet CD 3046, 1979). It is credited to Garry Ó Briain. You can hear a short sample on this page. (There have been several bands named Skylark, and several songs called ALL OF IT. I think even Allmusic.com has its history somewhat confused, and has attributed some albums to the wrong 'Skylark.') A band called Wild Mountain Thyme recorded Ó Briain's ALL OF IT on their album "Of Moose and Men" (Orchard CD 800653, 2001). You can hear a sample on this page. David Munnelly, Helen Flaherty, and Philip Masure—calling themselves simply Munnelly Flaherty Masure—recorded Ó Briain's ALL OF IT on their album "Whenever" (Music & Words CD 4057, 2010). You can hear a sample on this page. |
