I have a recording by Corkman Jimmy Crowley from many years ago, and I see it's available on his more recent (1998) CD Uncorked [LIVE] (nice title) available from Amazon, where there is an audio clip of the song.

I'd say Jimmy Crowley counts as someone of note, Peter :0)

The version which used to be played on Radio 2 in the UK was by Brendan Shine, who released a large number of whimsical or novelty Irish songs. Brendan Shine would not be regarded as part of the folk scene, but was (possibly still is) a prolific and popular Irish singer.

It is a mixture of social comment, and a euphemism for sexual favours to landlords.
