There is lots about Delia in the Digitrad and the Forum but now chords. I especially like Roy Bookbinder's version. Also, what is the history of this song? A song about a female gambler being shot down by a lover has probably got a story behind it. Jim |

White, American Negro Folk-Songs, 1925, says: "Note that in all the "Delie" songs, which are closely connected with "Frankie and Albert," if not originally the same song, the situation is reversed and the woman is shot by the man, instead of vice-versa." There are probably several tunes used with the song; the meter varies from song to song. See the explanation by Garst in thread 11867, an attempt to tie the song to an event. But note that the Delia's-Delie are quite different from one song to another. More than one Delia? Another old song, "All I got's done gone," may be mixed in here as well. |

The song "Delie" (Delie Gone) was missed by the compilers of the Index and the date 1937 was attached. The song first appeared in a manuscript by M. L. Hamlin, 1924, collected by him in Durham, NC. and given to N. I. White (1925), thread 11867- "from memory of a song taught Frank Goodell of Spartanburg, SC, ... by an old Negro to whom he paid $1.00 to teach him to play the guitar." Learned probably between 1900 and 1904. No evidence of it ever being a honky-tonk song. When it got to the Bahamas is unknown, but it was known in the South almost as early as the Frankie and Albert songs, if the informants are to be believed. |

(C) Delia (F) Delia, (C) take no one's advice Last words I heard her say was (F) "Jesus Christ" (C) Well, she's one more (G) rounder gone (C). McTell recorded this a couple of times, with some differences in the lyrics and chorus. Gary Davis, as far as I can tell from Stefan Grossman's tab (I've never heard his record and can't read Grossman's tab very well), did it without the change to F in the first line, but that's the distinctive feature of McTell's version. Doesn't sound "right" to me without it. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: DELIA or DEHLIA or DELIA From: JeremyC Date: 03 Jun 08 - 09:49 AM Apologies if this has already been answered, but Roy Book Binder's version of Delia is basically "Cocaine Blues" with two extra chords: a C in G form (fifth fret barre across the D, G, and B strings with your little finger on the 8th fret) and an F in D form (play a D chord with your middle, ring, and little fingers, move it up three frets, and get the root (D string, third fret) with your index finger). All the rest of it is essentially Cocaine blues, and you play it in standard tuning. Book Binder does capo up two frets, though. |
