Joys of love(Plasir D'amour)

My love loves me
and of all the wonders I see
the joys of love
will last all of your whole
life through.

Shall I stay?
would it be a sin?
the joys of love
are so short
and the pain...so long.

Yet...
The joys of love will last
all of your whole life through.(Repeat)

Here is my pure translation:

Pleasure of love lasts but a moment,
Sorrow of love lasts all of life.
I have left everything for the ungrateful one, Sylvie.
She leaves me and takes another lover.

Pleasure of love lasts but a moment,
Sorrow of love lasts all of life.

"As long as this water will run sweetly toward this meadow which borders on the prairie,
I will love you," Sylvie would repeat to me.

The water still runs but she has changed.

Pleasure of love lasts but a moment,
Sorrow of love lasts all of life.

Actually, "Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea, to the open arms of the sea" is from "Unchained Melody."
The bridge to ICHFILWY is "Like a river flows surely to the sea, darling, so it goes: some things are meant to be."

When I play it, the chord I use there is B minor, I think. I play it in G, I think. (Don't have a guitar in my hands at the moment.   It's that there playing in the key of C# that complicates things, I think.   (Can you use capos on dulcimers?)

Yes, it sounds good.

You know that tricky middle part, "Something rivers flow to the sea, to the sea..." It's a broken F#m chord, starting on C#.

Plaisir d'amour is also a good dulcimer song. I kept the chorus, but since it's so short, I improvise between repetitions.

How does it sound on the dulcimer, leeneia? Prob'ly pretty good, eh?

Genie, that's it! I have been trying to think of the song "I Can't Help Falling in Love with You" for weeks. One day it popped into my mind at the supermarket check-out line, and I said to myself, "I'll have to see if I can play that on the dulcimer." Later I couldn't recall the song to mind.

Thanks!

I sang this song for my voice teacher, using an English translation of the French version, ca 1775. I felt then, and I still feel, that it was cobbled together. It may be the oldest version we know of, but the chorus has flowing, even lilting feel to it, and the verses seem stilted and clumsy. It's hard to believe that the same person composed both parts.

If there were concertinas in 1775, then I suspect Martini of stealing it from an anonymous, impecunious, itinerant concertina player,

For one, the online translator does a reasonable job, eh, Paul?

Tweaking just a bit to account for idioms and context:

LOVE'S PLEASURE

Love's pleasure lasts but a moment,
Love's pain lasts a whole lifetime.

You left me for the ungrateful Sylvie,
She leaves me and takes another lover.

Pleasure of love lasts only a moment,
The pain of love lasts the whole life.

"As long as this water will run gently
toward the stream that borders the meadow,
I will love you," Sylvie repeated to me.
The water still runs, but it has changed!

Love's pleasure lasts only a moment,
Love's pain lasts the whole life.

here's what computer translation makes of it:

Pleasure Of love

Pleasure of love lasts only one moment,
Unhappy love affair lasts all the life.
You left me for the ungrateful Sylvie,
She leaves and takes another lover to me.
Pleasure of love lasts only one moment,
Unhappy love affair lasts all the life.

As long as this water will run gently
Towards this brook which borders the meadow,
I will love you, repeated me Sylvie…
Water runs encor, it changed however!
Pleasure of love lasts only one moment,
Unhappy love affair lasts all the life.

Personally I prefer Les Barker's "Ilkley da'Moor".

Vivian

You can see the original French score here Music et Memoria. Although the vocal score will enlarge, I could not get the piano score to enlarge.

It would be greatly appreciated if you can tell me where can I see or find the original music score of The Joys of Love as a through composed art song for piano or piano and voice.

Your help is appreciated. Thank you.

I remember being rather amused sitting in a taxi outside a church in Bootle once (waiting to take the Registrar to another booking), and hearing the carrillon playing Plaisir d'Amour for the wedding. Lovely tune, but I presume the happy couple had no idea what the words meant....

Correction to GUEST,Q's link. "Plaisir d'amour" sung by Armand Gauthier (1927, Columbia 34076) can be heard HERE.

The original title by Martini (Jean Paul Egide Schwarzendorf) was "La Romance du chevrier."
Nana Mouskouri recorded it in 1972 (The British Concert, Fontana) and later (1980, 1989 vol. 1 of her "Classical" albums).
This website lists some of the recordings made of the song, from 1927 (Armand Gauthier), Joan Baez (1968) Brigitte Bardot (1971), Marianne Faithfull (1974):

Nana Mouskouri's lyrics are HERE:

Plaisir D'amour

Plaisir d'amour ne dure qu'un moment,
Chagrin d'amour dure toute la vie.
Tu m'as quitté pour l'ingrate Sylvie,
Elle me quitte et prend un autre amant.
Plaisir d'amour ne dure qu'un moment,
Chagrin d'amour dure toute la vie.

Tant que cette eau coulera doucement
Vers ce ruisseau qui borde la prairie,
Je t'aimerai, me répétait Sylvie...
L'eau coule encor, elle a changé pourtant !
Plaisir d'amour ne dure qu'un moment,
Chagrin d'amour dure toute la vie.

Wasn't there a version of this which included the line "I want to live"?
