Has anyone in the US seen the latest move by Bush and co, a loophole in the US air pollution laws has given Bush the oppurtunity to open 17,000 outdated power stations and factories, which will allow them to increase there carbon emmisions.

According to the US environmental protection agency this will amount to a death knell for the clean air act.

The rules could represent the biggest defeat for US environmentalists
since the Bush administration abandoned the Kyoto Treaty. Ard Mhacha.

Here's today's Guardian front page lead story on that - Bush's pollution charter

Not that I agree with the policy at all, but the rules allow these old plants to stay open, not to "open," which implies that they are now closed, and it was critics of the EPA who made that "death knell" comment...this per McGrath's link.

Even without this latest step backwards, twisters, forest fires, etc, are on the increase. May the trends continue till the electorate wakes up (which out of consideration for the rest of the world I hope will be soon).

It allows them in effect to be totally rebuilt over a few years, without having taking any account whatsoever of up-to-date requirements on pollution control. It's a deliberate legal loophole to help some of Bush's paymasters.

I thought this was going to be a rant on copying music off the net onto CDs!

I'm not at all surprised. Every single policy change Bush has made since taking office (I mean that literally) has been to benefit his major corporate benefactors. And most people in the US don't give a damn.

Aloha,
Mark

I think it would be more accurate to say that they accept the view that being loyal Americans means that they feel they also owe loyalty to huge multi national US based corporations. It's very convenient for Bush's paymasters of course.
We have a similar sort of nonsense in the UK. Many people believe that if one feels no sense of loyalty to the absurd pageantry of royalty, then you can't be a loyal citizen of the UK.
Personally, I can't think of anyone whom I would rather call a traitor than one who allowed corporate vultures to pollute and poison his population.

And, my state, Maine, suffers from being downwind of that pollution.

Good for ya, Kendall! Makes a man outa ya. I've been to Maine and there ain't nothin' there but nice people, beautiful scenery, gorgeous trees, a fantastic coastline, clear streams, and wildlife.

Who needs that crap, anyway? If we gotta dump the ess-oh-two somewhere, why not dump it on Maine? Cost too damned much to clean the stacks, and besides, we got us an energy problem. So jist quit yer whinin' and bitchin', take a deep breath, and remember: the Bush enclave is in Kennebunkport....
