Subject: Tech: Hackers attacking hotmail? false alarm?
From: Mark Cohen

Just tried to access my supplemental email account on Hotmail, and got the message "the server is too busy," which I've never seen before. I seem to recall reading something about a coordinated hacker attack on August 26, and it's 5 minutes before August 26 on the East Coast (only 5:55 PM here in the islands). Vanguard? or coincidence?

Aloha,
Mark

Uh, sorry...but MSN is by no means perfect...I am sure it is just an outage at the moment. They do occur from time to time.

Well, you never know. For example, have you read about that new virus that turns any text you type into gibberish? Fortunately, my antivirus program vpci ytp dd5b c/;pv ownoiiz 3.3ld s0c8sh sli sowb-07w is socgs.l

It's happening all the time on *all* major mail servers as far as I can tell.

I work tech support for a webbuilder company, and we use a rudimentary Outlook system. We're still averaging tens of thousands of Sobig.F messages daily. At the height, I believe we were averaging around 250k for the first two or three days.

That's for somewhat less then 10k active members.

Now imagine Hotmail's accounts... or Yahoo's... or AOL's...

I have noted that hotmail and my local server are significantly more sluggish lately, no matter what speed the modem says it is working at.

The speed the modem is working at is very misleading....to get a more accurate picture you would have to conduct an actual speed test...
