Subject: BS: Kendall's new toy From: kendall Date: 01 Sep 03 - 10:12 PM For the last few months, I've been missing the ocean badly, and wondering how I could get back on the bay. Yesterday, a fan gave me a 27 foot sailboat, free of charge! All I have to do is clean it up. Pene Azul says he will post the photo I sent him. Thanks Jeff.

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: EBarnacle1 Date: 01 Sep 03 - 10:34 PM Kendall, you know there is no such thing as a free boat. It's like a puppy. You have to take care of it, keep it clean, make it behave, give it a place to stay when you are away, pay for insurance, etc. Anyway, congratulations and fair winds. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: Big Mick Date: 01 Sep 03 - 10:43 PM Details, skipper, I need details. Brand, type, rig, hull material..... I just may need to come out there and take her for a spin............... Mick |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: Amos Date: 02 Sep 03 - 12:21 AM Here's rooting for ya, Skipper!! I just got as similar deal from a guy who can't find the time to maintain his 21-foot Capri -- if I dive the bottom and clean up topsides, I can use it at will and he'll pay the slip fees. Sounds like a fair deal to me!! I can't wait to get her spruced up -- she's been ignored for over a year and the local gulls have taken to storing their fishheads on her....but she's sound underneath!! A |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: catspaw49 Date: 02 Sep 03 - 12:46 AM I'd like to offer the services of Lane, Fielding, Patterson, and Swan, Layabouts at Large to both of you. I await your call. Spaw Founding Partner, LFPS |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: kendall Date: 02 Sep 03 - 06:04 AM She was built in Holland, fibreglass, fixed keel, 27 feet on deck, 24 on the waterline. She is a sloop, sound as a dollar (a pre Bush dollar). The engine is an abomination, a two cylinder inboard made in Denmark. She is filthy, full of leaves, spiders and plain old everyday crud. The engine turns over, which is a very big thing. I was not looking forward to rebuilding another engine. The last one I did was a 1940 LaSalle V/8. Heavy as a bucket of hog's liver. Anyone know where I can get parts(if needed) for an old MARSTAL marine engine? it is old, runs on a magneto. Jeff posted the photo among my others at members info |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: curmudgeon Date: 02 Sep 03 - 08:16 AM She looks real nice, Kendall. When do you expect to have her in the water? |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: EBarnacle1 Date: 02 Sep 03 - 09:21 AM You may have done this already but check to see whether there is a web site for the engine. If not, you might try an outboard mechanic to see whether he can cobble up a new magneto. [Obviously, I mean a real mechanic, not a black boxer.] If the engine is really shot, you might consider converting to a small diesel, even though the conversion costs are rather high. Of course, you could always sail off a mooring and forget about having an engine. |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: Big Mick Date: 02 Sep 03 - 10:05 AM Skipper....I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I have checked her out, and by the cut of her it is plain she is sufferin'......the poor creature has been relocated from her native Great Lakes and is longin' for home. Because I am a generous sort, I can take her off'n your hands and return this great beastie back to where she belongs. I, in the spirit of generosity and friendship, would be responsible for her perpetual care and well being. Off course my kids would do the actual work, as I cannot endanger my status as a Founding partner in Lane, Fielding, Patterson and Swan. But I would be happy to do all the lounging on beautiful days. Let me know when I can pick her up. Mick |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: Dave Bryant Date: 02 Sep 03 - 12:30 PM Hi Kendall, she looks great - wish my boat looked as clean - don't think that you've told us her name yet though. I don't think you actually said that the magneto was non-working did you. If it works OK and you can in hand crank it then you don't need to use a battery to start the engine as you would with coil ignition. If it is u/s, then provided that the points still open and close OK, it's usually reasonably simple to install a car ignition coil and capacitor. Mind you anyone who can charm "a fan" to give them a boat like that, should be able to to get hold of another engine too. I wish you well to sail her. |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: Amos Date: 02 Sep 03 - 06:02 PM However, if you do take Morty on as crew--and I admit she has a flair for pretending to learn things--there are historical lessons to be applied regarding hiring women who want to ship out as cabin boys. I think you're supposed to make them go shirtless for a day or something...anyway you'll also have to account for Allan, now. Maybe he can do the heavy stuff. Sounds like a lark!! A |

Don't matter what kind... They is all the same. Just havin; in inboard is real nice. I used to crew on a centerboard O'Day 27 and the engine was an outboard. Bummer. A stern look and an understanding grin with dimples led me to believe I was not alone. Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: kendall Date: 21 Sep 03 - 02:44 PM It most certainly is. Unless we are looking at two different pictures. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: GUEST Date: 21 Sep 03 - 06:04 PM Really? Well, I don't see any masts on your boat but it appears to be a single masted boat. Technically, you would call it a ketch or yawl if the aft mast was shorter than the main mast and a schooner if the fore mast was shorter than the main mast. So where are the masts? |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: Amos Date: 21 Sep 03 - 07:02 PM Guest, Kendall is referring to the schooner Compass Rose which I made a link to earlier, not the wee thing he's been given as a gift. Different pictures... A |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: kendall Date: 21 Sep 03 - 07:18 PM I'll have you know my thing is not wee! It's 27 feet long. I knew there was a misunderstanding here. Yes, my boat is a sloop. The mast is in Massachusettes, along with the sails and tiller. Hell of a squall we had! LOL |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: Amos Date: 21 Sep 03 - 07:38 PM And her ass ended up out in Dallas...as the song says about young Alice... |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: EBarnacle1 Date: 22 Sep 03 - 12:34 AM That hole sounds like an opportunity to install a bilge drain plug so you don't get buildup over the winter or at other times when she's out. I just spend Saturday replacing part of the deck and about 4 feet of molded toe rail on a friend's Peason Triton, also disappearing a 1/4 inch hole below the waterline, a bad abrasion in just above the waterline and other problems too numerous to mention, incurred when she broke loose from her mooring in January. We brought her to the marina in a sinking condition and hauled immediately. A bit of sanding and a bit of paint and noone will know the problems ever occurred. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: kendall Date: 22 Sep 03 - 07:57 AM Through hull fitings make me nervous. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: EBarnacle1 Date: 22 Sep 03 - 09:36 AM I agree. However, a properly installed plug is not like a valve that can come loose. It can also save you a lot of grief in things spoiled by water accumulated during storage--especially wood, carpets, electricals, etc. The only time it is open is when the boat is out of the water and it is part of your prelaunch check list. I have recently seen two boats take significant damage from water accumulation. One of them had significant interior delamination and had to be scrapped. Water will seek out problems you did not know you had and make them worse. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new toy From: Amos Date: 22 Sep 03 - 09:38 AM Well, sure. But usually they work ok....if you put them in right. Otherwise, you just have to fill a perfectly good hole... |
