Subject: Alice Babs From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Sep 03 - 04:59 PM Here's a blast from the past for you older folkies out there, not that the lady in question was a folk singer. I remember hearing her sing a version of After you've Gone with yodelling intervals. I've been looking for it ever since, and can't find it anywhere, and I'm beginning to wonder if I imagined it. Subject: RE: Alice Babs From: katlaughing Date: 02 Sep 03 - 05:09 PM Lots of hits on her name on google. She's still at it...just came out with a new CD at 77 yrs. old! Here's one bit about the song in question: Born Alice Nilson in 1924 in Kalmar, Sweden, Babs has been a film and TV star in Europe, touring for some years with a trio including Sven Asmussen. She had a UK hit in 1963 with After You've Gone, and recorded with Duke Ellington the same year, later singing in his Sacred Concerts, as well as at the 1975 Newport Jazz Festival. Ellington said 'Alice Babs is a composer's dream, for with her he can forget all the limitations and just write his heart out'. (Donald Clarke) |
