Ah Ferg!!! I heard Thomas O'? sing this in Cararua back in 86? while sitting in front of a pub in a car with Jerry O'Sullivan the Uilleann Piper. This huge voice was comming out of the pub and suddunly we realized it was live, sounded like it was amplified, it wasn't. We were looking for our stroke rower in our currach crew, Greg Brennan, (now on Telivision na Gaeltacht) so in we go, and what a day. I got out my flute Jerry got his pipes, what a day. I hope someone comes up with the words, one of the GREAT immigration songs. Is it O'Kennidy?
Cheers
Larry

The Words are in a book titled, Croch Suas. It is a great song. My home computer is down at the moment. I'll save this thread to add the lyrics later if noone else comes up with it.

Good on ya Brian! He wrote some of the best songs we all thought were traditional! Remind me of his last name when ya get back on line? Cheers Larry

Subject: Lyr Add: CÓILÍN PHÁDRAIG SHÉAMAIS (P Ó hAoláin)
From: GUEST,Philippa
Date: 04 Sep 03 - 11:38 AM

a song lamenting that Cóilín is destined for emigration

CÓILÍN PHÁDRAIG SHÉAMAIS
Pádraig Ó hAoláin

Ó saolaíodh thú is mairg a rá,
Go raibh an long anonn i ndán duit ?
Bhí sé romhat de shíor go mbeifeá lá,
I measc na n-imirceánach.
Ní maireachtáil ag baile dhuit,
Ní thusa féin is cáinte
Ach an dream a d'fhág tú thiar díomhaoin,
Ag stracadh leis an nganntan.

Curfá [chorus]
Tá long ag dul anonn inniu,
A Chóilín Phádraig Shéamais,
Agus imigh leat thar sáile anon,
Mar a bhfaighidh tú luach do shaothair.
Ag sclábhaíocht is ag sluasteáil cré,
Ó éirí go luí na gréine,
A bheas tú thall i dtír na nGall,
A Chóilín Phádraig Shéamais.

Is iomaí lá breá gréine,
A chaith tú ar bheagán buartha,
Ag fiach i measc na gcnocán glas,
Nó ag iascaireacht sna cuanta.
Ba ghaiscíoch ins an gcurach thú,
Is tú ' sharódh an gala,
Is ba bhinne leat ná ceol na bpíob,
Gíoscán na maidí ramha.

Ní fheicfidh tú arís go deo
Do chairde ná do ghaolta,
Is ní scarfaidh tú aríst go brách
An mhóin ar thaobh an tsléibhe.
Fag slán ag cladach is ag sliabh;
Fag slán ag Conamara,
Mar ní fhillfidh tú go deo na deor
Ar do thír nó ar do bhaile.

After a long search, here,at last, I found the words to Coiln Phadraig Sheamuis. I now would love to know who wrote this lovely song, is it traditional or modern, and who was the man who sang it. Is there a CD available. Thanks. Amor

Hi Amor.

'Cóilín Phádraig Shéamuis' was written by Pádraig Ó hAoláin and I have him singing this wonderful song on a compilation double CD produced in 1997 by Raidió na Gaeltachta to commerate the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the station in 1972. The name of the CD is Togha agus Rogha.
