Has anyone mentioned The Pig Song? That may not be the right title, but it starts out (singing at a sort of swerving, unsteady gait, with perhaps a hiccup here and there):

Yes Lasy Harry's is the same song that finishes each verse and chorus "And we camped at Lazy Harry's on the road to Gundagai" with some variation as Tramped from... etc. You can follow the blokes' trip with an atlas from the western plains of New South Wales to the road that passes through Gundagai from Melbourne to Sydney. Several place names are mentioned. They never make it to Sydney no matter how often you sing the song.

A friend guitarist/entertainer, Jerome Gordon Bedker, used to sing this one and did a fine job. I'm not certain of the arrangment transcribed here, (I just did a search online and found this), but I can still hear Jerome's version echoing in my memory as I write this.

Jerome died this past year from liver problems due to his abuse of alcohol.

Uncle Dave O - funny you should mention Tom T Hall and "I Like Beer" During the 1986 Peterborough COuntry Music Festival, a TV crew from "Wrap Around Nashville" programme got in contact with a friend of mine and asked if he could provide some "good ol' British folk singers" to go down to the Bell Hotel at Stilton. Four of us turned up and this guy said "Hi I'm Walt Adams, the producer of Wrap Around Nashville and you're going to perform with Tom T.Hall, the storyteller." We glanced blankly at each other and then at him and he sensed our lack of recognition of this legend of country music (well it wasn't as if he came to the local singaround on a regular basis) "What? - you've never heard of Tom T.Hall, the storyteller??" Anyway in walks Tom T.Hall, the storyteller and he goes on to talk about how quaint it was to be in a "good ol' english beer joint" (The Bell - one of the oldest pubs in the area - a "beer joint"??!! - I ask you). He then went on to sing "I Like Beer" with the four of us providing instant harmony which impressed him no end - so much so that he invited us all to appear at the Grand Ol' Oprey next time we were in Nashville. I've yet to take him up on the offer. He was a good bloke though. The programme went out on US TV a couple of weeks later and they sent us a copy of it to have a look at. So that's my claim to fame as far as country music goes.

Off the top of my head (and limited to Irish/Scottish songs0 two of my favorites are "Three Drunken Maidens" which can be found in the DigiTrad as "Drunken Maidens" (the lyrics are nearly the same as I have, only minor differences), and "In Kirkintilloch There's Nae Pubs." I don't find it in the digitrad. I was told this story: The town of Kirkintilloch, a few miles NNE of Glasgow, was well known (and unique for a Scottish community) in being "dry" and thus with no pubs. Somebody, I don't know who -- maybe Wolfgang or someone can help out with information about the song and the town -- wrote a chorus to another song by way of explaning this anomaly (a Scottish town with no pubs.) The verses have no real bearing on the information passed along in the chorus.
