Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 19 Nov 23 - 09:16 AM Still waiting for the first snowstorm. Today, it was below freezing, and cold enough for snow. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 08 Nov 23 - 06:25 PM Now comes the first big winter storm. Overnight there will be sleet and ice; as it warms up tomorrow, it changes to rain. Could be nasty at times. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 07 Nov 23 - 03:08 PM Temperatures here are chilly overnight, not bad during the day. Mostly the weather system is bringing in storms, and south of Canada the storms are more rain than snow. Right now there is no rain/snow falling, but there are stormclouds overhead and the winds are blowing the last of the leaves through the air. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 01 Nov 23 - 08:49 AM Gnu, I believe, has already had his first snow of the season some time ago, with the storm systems in the North Atlantic. Hope gnu is all right. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 01 Nov 23 - 08:43 AM And so it begins, on 1 November. it's falling as I enter this, and the ground is covered, and the bare trees have their branches outlined in snow. At least there is no wind to speak of. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Stilly River Sage Date: 07 Nov 23 - 10:51 AM There seems to be an El Niño effect that is cooling keberoxu's neighborhood more than the rest of us are experiencing. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Donuel Date: 02 Nov 23 - 06:32 AM Its below freezing this morning in DC suburbs. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Mrrzy Date: 09 Nov 23 - 12:43 PM Gonna be near 90 today, °F. Teacher, can we have class outside today? |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Mrrzy Date: 01 Nov 23 - 09:08 AM We haven't had our first frost yet. It was in the 80's for the Halloween weekend. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Ebbie Date: 20 Nov 23 - 09:05 PM As of yesterday we, here in Southeast Alaska, are under blizzard warning. Hey, man- it's windy out there. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Charmion Date: 08 Nov 23 - 10:45 PM Thunder, lightning and sleet in southwestern Ontario. A good night to have nowhere to go. Driving will be lethal tonight. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Charmion Date: 06 Nov 23 - 06:22 PM Stratford had its first spits of snow on Wednesday, 1 November. Now it’s raining, cold and raw, and likely to carry on like that for the rest of the week. Snow on Remembrance Day is normal here, although it typically melts within a day or two. I believe somebody does that on purpose to make the occasion as unlike a holiday as possible. You’re meant to go home with numb fingers and toes, and feel grateful for the roof over your head as you make yourself a nice cup of peaceful tea. |

Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Charmion Date: 27 Dec 22 - 10:06 AM Two days after Christmas and 12 hours after the end of a record-testing blizzard, the snow has already ceased to be beautiful holiday decor and become a damnable nuisance. Roll on April. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Dec 22 - 11:50 PM It isn't the first snow of winter, but the first freeze of winter. Google tells me that the Winter Solstice in Northern Hemisphere will be at 3:47?PM on Wednesday, December 21. Time corrected for Central time. On December 22 and 23 we're due for single-digit freeze temperatures. The leave-your-faucets-dripping so your pipes don't burst freeze. Snow? Maybe. Later on. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Mrrzy Date: 18 Dec 22 - 11:11 AM We've had our solstice party, and one frost, but no snow yet... |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Dec 22 - 10:12 AM I've lost family due to slip and fall on ice - head hitting concrete is never good. Urge him not to delay that emergency visit. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Charmion Date: 18 Dec 22 - 09:56 AM Snow, and more snow. Not our first fall of the year, or even the second or third -- this is Ontario, after all. Billowing picturesquely past the study window, it's making me wonder where I left the ice scraper that's supposed to be in the boot of the car. If I buy a new one, I will immediately find the old one, and possibly the one I lost before I bought the old one. Stratford is in that halcyon pre-holiday phase when fresh snow is more Christmassy than it is a hazard to navigation and sanity. By February -- no, four days after New Year -- we will have returned to our normal winter state of mixed resentment and resignation. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 18 Dec 22 - 09:26 AM And with the snow, the first "black ice" of winter. People are already taking tumbles. I just talked with a restaurant employee who went to the laundromat after work, when it was dark outside, and did what he calls a "face-plant" on concrete. He thinks he may have had a concussion, and will have to go be seen by somebody (urgent care center or some such). |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Dec 22 - 01:04 PM No snow, but slightly below freezing last night. I finally remembered to put the styrofoam cover over the back yard faucet on the wall (to keep from freeze damage later.) We didn't have that many big snows even in the Pacific NW where I grew up, but when they did happen I remember in particular the evenings with a fresh deep snow when we got dressed in snow gear and went out to play in the yard. The magic of snow by streetlight affected every child on the block. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 17 Dec 22 - 12:46 PM Snow, then rain, then snow, actually. The rain helped clear up the roads and sidewalks. The snow is over for now, but the predicted cold will keep the snow on the ground and prevent melting for some days to come. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 02 Dec 21 - 06:25 PM and, of course, the first decent snow of winter is thawing and melting with the current rainstorm. Never mind. It will re-freeze, it always does . . . |

Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Dave the Gnome Date: 29 Nov 21 - 05:09 AM Pretty thick layer here in Airedale, N Yorks. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 28 Nov 21 - 02:27 PM The biggest thing I did yesterday was scrape the snow off of my parked car before nightfall, so the snow would not freeze on to the windscreens and wiper blades. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 27 Nov 21 - 08:06 PM The REAL first snow of winter was last night, the plows/ploughs have been hard at work all day hereabouts. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 20 Nov 21 - 11:46 PM As guessed, the snow is history. There is of course more where that came from. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: keberoxu Date: 19 Nov 21 - 04:49 PM ... the first snow where I am staying, anyway, in a river valley with little mountains and broad hills and stuff. East of the Hudson River Valley. Other places hereabouts have already had their first snow. The weather currently, though, means that the snow will pretty much melt; there will be a hard freeze tonight; and it's slick roads first thing in the morning, but really no white stuff to look at. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: SINSULL Date: 24 Sep 03 - 09:19 PM I haven't even gotten around to singing "The Last Rose Of Summer" and snow is happening? Please don't be as bad as last year! I can't afford the oil. |
Subject: RE: BS: First snow of winter From: Mudlark Date: 24 Sep 03 - 01:45 AM Autumn greetings, all. I come to read over this and other snow-related threads just to cool off. Summer is hanging on here like grim death, with temps well over 100F every day. I'm really sick of this heat! |

Subject: BS: First snow of winter From: John MacKenzie Date: 23 Sep 03 - 02:26 PM We've had our first snow fall of this winter, up on the tops. Quite a heavy fall as opposed to the usual early dusting, is this an omen for the forthcoming winter? Giok |
