I'm no authority, but...John D'Angelico built guitars in New York (City) from 1932 until 1964. They can fetch between 5 and 100 thousand dollars, depending on the market, the condition, and model. Though there appear to have been several generalized models, they vary considerably in cosmetics, fixtures, soundholes, bracing and other things. Some guitars are being produced under the D'Angelico name overseas I think, but I've neither seen or played one.

I bet Stanley Jay at Mandolin Brothers (NY) knows more than a little about this.

What specifically did you need help with?

Well Mooh, this particular guitar just came into my hands and I really don't know to much about it. Some close told me it was worth a bit. So here I am trying to find info. on the Web.
The full info. written on the guitar is as follows:
D'Angelico New Yorker Exel (not excel)DeLuxe. No. 1075.
I cannot find this model on the net (thus far).

There might be some mention of it in the Blue Book of Guitars which is an annual publication. Check your bookstores. If your guitar is the real deal, it may be worth some money, that is if you want to sell it.

You might have to take it for a pro appraisal to know its value, and depending on where you live that might or might not be easy, but an email to Elderly, Mandolin Bros, Gruhn, 12th Fret, or wherever will get you started.

Beer, Here are photos of an Exel model from the Serious Acoustics Guitar Museum site. It has the right spelling of Exel and, judging from the date, may have a number somewhere near yours. Perhaps they can give you more information.

I've just noticed this thread (I don't normally get as far as the BS thread - this should have been in the music section!).

As Mooh said the original D'Angelico guitars can be worth a lot of money. Here's a link to the D'Angelico site, which has some information about him (and a scrapbook showing famout guitarists throught the years who played D'Angelicos) and where you can probably ask for some information about the guitar you have: D'Angelico guitars.

It also tells you about the Japanese produced new range under the D'Angelico name. (I have one of these - they only come in around £3000 in the UK - a fraction of the current price for the originals)
