I recently bought an Appalachian dulcimer on E-Bay and discovered a maker's label inside with the name "Crestline". Does anyone know where these where made and if the maker is still in business? The seller lived in Arkansas and could only tell me that the instrument was part of an estate sale and that the previous owner had the instrument for at least 12 years.

Not familiar with the name, and a lot of makers have come and gone. A Google search for "Crestline dulcimer" produces a couple of links to folk festivals in Crestline, Ohio, and Crestline, Calif. Maybe someone at those sites could get you pointed in the right direction? A description of your new dulcimer and other clues -- does the label say anything else? -- might be of help.

It's a teardrop or Old Virginia style dulcimer, not particularly well finished - somewhat of a "rustic" look. I was a little disappointed with it when I opened the packaging but in truth it has an excellent "voice" and considerable volume. It has three courses of strings with the melody course doubled. The headstock is a scroll but not particularly well done. Because of its looks, I was initially convinced that it was a homemade one-off instrument but then I found the label. It simply says "Crestline" and has a four digit handwritten serial number. The tuners were of the metal friction type (which I've since replaced with geared tuners). I'm not sure of the wood but the headstock might be mahogany. Other than that, it's a pretty good bargain for 80 bucks.

$80? Bargain indeed. Good luck finding the maker.
