I'm planning a trip to Memphis, TN in October for a long weekend. I've never been there before. I'd appreciate suggestions of places to go to hear blues especially (acoustic and electric) and other places you might suggest.

Thanks, MGD

Got to see Beale St. Just take care where you park your car. The original Sun Studios is just around the corner. Also, if you don't go to Graceland you'll always wish you had. There's a KOA campground right next to it, so you can hear recorded Elvis music way into the night.

Have fun, Chet W.

MGD,

If you have about two hours, you might want to try the Martin Luther King Museum on the site of the motel where he was murdered. I tagged along on a guided tour last February and was duly impressed.

Also, don't miss Corky's Barbecue. They call it the best BBQ in Memphis and I am a believer. If you are a vegan, of course, skip it. I went back a second time (not for seconds).

Sun Studios is so musically historical, and I love to say I've been there. Don't be expected to be overly impressed. There is not much there, there. It's an office, an acoustic room, and the sound booth (which you can only peek into). I was impressed how much was done with so little.

Roger in Baltimore

What weekend are you coming to Memphis?? The Bluestock Festival will be October 23 and 24, with over 100 acts from all over the world up and down Beale. There will also be movie presentations, art exhibits, a trade show, and industry speaker panels. Check it out at www.bluestock.org Any other weekend, my favorite places are on Beale. Go to the Blues City Cafe, they advertise the "Best meal on Beale" and can back up that claim. This is the place to go for late night music, the second band starts about midnight and goes until about 5. The Center for Southern Folklore is a great place for more traditional blues forms, the atmosphere is good as are Judy Peiser and her staff. The Black Diamond always has a good band. If you arer there on the last Thursday of the month don't miss the Keith Sykes songwriter's thing. Another of my favorites is Gary Hardy at Alfred's. Gary does a show featuring songs by Memphis writers, very well done. I f you have any other questions you can reach me at a3kids@gmi.net
