Subject: RE: BS: Happy B-Day Allan C. !!! From: rangeroger Date: 12 Nov 03 - 09:49 PM From the vantage of my vast experiance relative to my being older than you,I will refer to a newspaper article I read to day that reports on the healthful aspects of dark beer. Seems it's full of healthy flavonoids the same as chocolate. So have some of the vile black stuff with a large bar of dark chocolate for your birthday. It'll cure what ails ya. rr |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy B-Day Allan C. !!! From: Morticia Date: 13 Nov 03 - 08:11 AM We have grand-kittens? That is so great.......love the names BTW Kelly, LOL. Don't know why your dad hasn't replied but it maybe because he has his face stuck in either the book of British Flora, Notes from a Small Island or possibly the single malt.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy B-Day Allan C. !!! From: Allan C. Date: 13 Nov 03 - 10:17 AM ...er...Morty, please remind me to decline the next offer of double shots of both Jameson's and Famous Grouse on top of the ale. I haven't been quite right ever since. (Not that I was ever quite right before...) Thanks for the thread, Kelly and thanks to all who sent bithday wishes. This was certainly one of the best ever. Morticia gave me the book of British Flora partly because everywhere we've traveled I have been asking her, "What's that growing over there - the one with the orange berries?" To which she almost invariably answers, "Shrub." unless it is short. Then the response is, "Plant." Well, you get the picture. The book mentioned was a gift from PoD. It is a collection of impressions of an American in England. I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Perhaps it will help to accelerate the learning curve, the centrifugal force of which, so far, has kept me just a bit off balance. However, I find that I am now able to count out pocket change when time is not of the essence; I can usually remember to look for a trolly at the market, rather than a shopping cart; and generally can wander about the neighborhood without people pointing and whispering (anymore). So I must be making some progress. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy B-Day Allan C. !!! From: Linda Kelly Date: 13 Nov 03 - 03:58 PM Happy birthday Alan-may suggest you stay in on Friday evenings and watch BBC2-there is a plethora of all things herbacious and whilst Morty is doing the ironing or performing some other useful task alan Titchmarsh and Monty Don will avail you of all sorts of gardening tips and hints. Watch it for as long as I have and you will be able to identify not only that a plant is a plant but that it is invariably able to thrive in a soil type completely opposite to that in your garden. Plants are completely selfish in that way. Sod em all hail concrete thats what I say! |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy B-Day Allan C. !!! From: Geoff the Duck Date: 15 Nov 03 - 01:02 PM Allan - if you want some good pictorial guides to British plants of fungi, look out for the name Roger Phillips. He is a photographer who has produced some very useful books. The one on Mushrooms is EXCELLENT, although a bit big to actually carry with you when out picking the blighters. I sincerely hope thet someone has thought to book you a ticket to a good old British Pantomime. You really need to see one in the flesh to complete your entry into the UK. Quack! Geoff. |

From: Liz the Squeak Date: 17 Nov 03 - 04:53 AM Allan - if you can persuade your "good ladies" to bring you to London, we can complete your education with my late father's collection of gardening books that range from Roses to Rhubarb, taking in ponds, cacti and tomatoes en route. We can even give you a practical demonstration on growing shrubs, bulbs and duck weed. Then there are the DIY books....... Have you checked your soffits recently? LTS |
