Yes, Martin Carthy's version is the one I have heard... Written By David Ackles, who I am not familiar with... (hint hint)... I wonder if anyone knows the history behind this song? Who was this "Andrew" anyway then?
It's a tough one to play, and even tougher for me, to sing and play simultaniously... I'm getting it slowly... measurable in small incriments... ttr

It's from David Ackles' second album, I believe. Ackles was a piano player, which may be why trying to accompany the song on guitar may be a challenge. I think that's why Carthy recorded it a capella. There were no notes on the Ackles recording, so I don't know if there's a true story behind it. Ackles himself became a college teacher after he recorded a couple more albums (on the Elektra and Columbia labels). He passed away a couple years ago I think.

Martin accompanied himself on guitar, surely; sparingly and with good taste as I recall; and not in a chapel, either...

I must check out David Ackles. I didn't remember that album as being his second but I loved "The Road To Cairo" covered by Julie Driscoll and "Downriver". And I do remember "His name is Andrew and he works in a canning factory...".
Thanking you for jogging my memory,Thomas.
