I'm looking for the "Haywire Mac" McClintock recording of this. Anyone?

Not sure if you are looking for the lyrics, record info or what, but put:
MAY I SLEEP IN YOUR BARN TONIGHT, MISTER?
in the search and there are several threads that might answer your request.

Mark:
Two recordings of "May I Sleep IN Your Barn Tonight Mister"
located at "Rose The Record Ladys" site on Real Country Pages 4 and 15. One is by Mac Wiseman and the other is by Hank Thompson.

I've looked all over, and can't find the Haywire Mac version on a current recording. The Traditional Ballad Index says it's Victor V-40264, 1930.
It was easy to find recordings of Haywire or Harry "Mac" McClintock singing "Big Rock Candy Mountain" on CD, but reissues of other recordings seem to be rare. American Gramophone & Wireless has some, but its convoluted index makes it hard to find recordings. Look deep into their site, and maybe you'll get lucky.
I found somewhere (click) that he may have used the name "Radio Mac" when he recorded this one.

Why not try Joe Bussard's website of Vintage 78s
If he's got it, he'll make a copy of it for you for a nominal fee.

I HAVE looked, but so far have not turned up my Harry McClintock LP. I don't think it is on there, anyway. I have a few other sources that so far have come up empty as well. I'll continue to look around and will ask Stewie to see what he can do.

Dale, it is not on the only McClintock LP that I have and I can't recall seeing reference to any reissue of a McClintock version of the song.

According to Meade et alia 'Country Music Sources' p 309, he recorded it twice for Victor in Culver City, California, on 13 December 1929, the first as Radio Mac McClintock with Mac's Haywire Orchestra {vcl, 2 vlns, hca & bjo} and the second as Radio Mac McClintock {vcl w/gtr}. The band recording was unissued and the solo recording was issued as Vi B40264 in July 1930.

Bruce, my Opera browser brings a fraud warning up on that link. It says that the site is blacklisted and advises against giving them any confidential information.

I guess you are OK as long as you don't let them near your credit card. The sound clips seem to work. This is the Opera message:

I have never heard any complaints against Venerable, but I never have done business with them either so I don't have any first hand knowledge.

By the way, anyone interested in these old recordings can find free plays on the Honking Duck site. It takes a bit of navigating and the old 78's are sometimes scratchy but there is a wealth of stuff there.

No, Dotty, I don't think that's it.

I was at a session once where an old man sang a song from the 30's. It was about a man who'd lost his job and family and was looking for shelter for the night. The chorus included this:

Can I sleep in your barn tonight, mister?
tum tum tum tumty tum tumty tum
I don't have no tobacco or matches...

In other words, he was saying he couldn't set the hay on fire.

The tune was "Red River Valley."
