Subject: BS: Rugby World Cup - Corrections From: GUEST,John Gray in Oz Date: 23 Nov 03 - 09:55 PM A couple of corrections to comments in the Rugby World Cup thread. McGrath - It was not that Australia decided not to go with Waltzing Matilda, it was the rugby governing body who would not permit it as it is "not our national anthem." Their decision was correct, although a lot of us didn't like it.>br> Ard Mhacha - I gather your view is that only heavyweight boxers are "decent" boxers and, as such, Australia hasn't had any boxers of note. Of course I disagree with your view and list the following Oz world champion boxers, in date order ; Jimmy Carruthers, Lionel Rose, Johnny Famechon, Rocky Mattioli, Lester Ellis, Geoff Fenech, Barry Michael, Jeff Harding & Kostya Tszyu. Fenech was a world champion in the different weight divisions, is that "decent" enough for you. All in all, well done England, well played, you did your country proud. JG/FME |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup - Corrections From: GUEST,John Gray in Oz Date: 24 Nov 03 - 10:35 AM Ard - If they're boxing "fans" they should know them, otherwise they're not. Oh, and I meant to say that Fenech was a world champion in 3 weight divisions. Don't get too many heavyweights doing that. JG/FME |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup - Corrections From: ard mhacha Date: 24 Nov 03 - 02:02 PM You could have also added that there was a Frenchman Famechon, and a Russian Tszyu included in that list of "Aussies". Ard Mhacha. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup - Corrections From: JennyO Date: 25 Nov 03 - 07:13 AM Ard mhacha, I am not by any stretch of the imagination a boxing fan. I'm not even interested in sport, yet I am familiar with 7 out of the 9 names. Jenny |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup - Corrections From: GUEST,John Gray in Oz Date: 25 Nov 03 - 10:23 AM Gee whizz Ard - you're tough on us. Yeah, Kostya was born east of the Urals, possibly in one of those new republics, and came to Oz in his late teens I think. Johhny Famechon left France when he was five. Both of them have "citizen of Australia" on their passports. I'll leave it to you to tell them they're not. JG/FME |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup - Corrections From: ard mhacha Date: 25 Nov 03 - 02:17 PM Greetings my Aussie friends, sure a wee bit of banter does no harm, Jenny I kid you not, I remember a good scrapper by the name of Dave Sands, no World Champ but he fought in the 1950`s and with just 8 World Titles you had to scrap for your laurels then. Dave was a good Middleweight and at the peak of his career he was killed in an auto accident. Johnny careful strollin` with the oul xxxx`s in you it can be dangerous. John ok I will give you those two. Ard Mhacha. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup - Corrections From: GUEST Date: 26 Nov 03 - 04:54 AM Shut up Machbox, you're a wanker. I'm English, and I've heard of at least 4 (and I don't approve of boxing). Well done to the Aussies for their good sportsmanship in defeat, I was expecting a storm of whinging and 'not fairs', but their response has been as sportsmanlike, dignified and excellent as their team - (making it easier to lose to them in the future, as no doubt we will, soon enough!)- perhaps there's not as much Irish in the Aussies as we were led to believe. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup - Corrections From: gnu Date: 26 Nov 03 - 05:06 AM At least you guys have something to argue about. I get to watch the USA vs France game tomorrow evening. Slight fucking delay in the coverage here. Not only did I lose money on the final; I didn't get to experience the disappointment first hand. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup - Corrections From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 Nov 03 - 02:06 PM Boxing is very much part of Rugby anyway. And of Australian Rules footie as well, from what I've seen of it. I rather admire the way that Australian TV commentators , when a fight breaks out in a Rules game, they seem to start to comment enthusiastically on it, as just another entertaining aspect of the game - in contrast to English commentators in similar situations, who always get po-faced as they deplore it. It's rather the same way in Tennis - they'd go on about how MacEnroe was spoling the spirit of Wimbledon, when in fact his tantrums were the highlight of the tournament, and the event is a real drag, now they all seem to behave themselves. |
