You idiots have no idea what you're saying. Since you've obviously never heard the original, you have no right to criticize it! The tune is fantastic; the song is poignant. Replace the word "him" with "her", which was the original version; it was changed from "her" to "him" because it was written for a male singer but recorded by Anne Murray.

If you ever heard the original, by Gene MacLellan himself, you would see exactly what I'm saying.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time.

While I don't share my friend Bruce's (Peace) "bloody awful" I don't feel that it is MacLellans masterpiece. I'll take "Put Your Hand In The Hand" over it any day and I am not at all religious!

Snowbird is still my favorite. Never cared for Gene's voice but his song as sung by Ann Murry was fine by me. Ron Hynes wrote a touching song about the passing of Gene titled "Godspeed".

Gene MacLellan was a Canadian legend, almost forgotten now. Fred McKenna was another. Gene's singing of Put Your Hand in the Hand was well done, CFRB used to play his version a lot circa 1970.

Yes, churchgoing people still teach their children to pray - but when you're anonymous and ask a question like that, people wonder whether you're trying to stir the pot or something.

I remember during the 1960's that Gene put out an album and it had alot of the songs on it that you folks speak of...his voice was one of the most unique and smooth in quality for the era...he had a really unappreciated career by the popular music industry and public at the time...it would only be fitting if the CBC or some other music entity in Canada paid tribute to him...he seems to have been a "behind the scenes" guy that was admired by songsters and musicians alike from that era...truly a gifted songwriter who has passed away and it seems so has his music....most unfortunate indeed.

In life Gene was a tortured soul who was perhaps unable to accept his greatness. As a performer he kept his stuff simple in the 60's folksinger style,but he was a great songwriter! His songs launched the career of Anne Murray but Gene stayed low key, but he did perform on Singalong Jubilee and Don Messer.
However the acorn falls close to the tree and his daughter Catherine is causing a stir in folksong circles.

Gene MacLellan was one of my favourite singers. I had an eight track tape(kind of ages me)that was almost worn out.

Gene sold 80 million copies of his tunes -- Anne Murray sold under 20 million records so far. Gene's career was about 25 years, Anne's continued for more than 40. Only a handful of artists have ever gotten anywhere near Gene's commercial appeal and ~no one with any credibility in music circles~ has ever tried to equate Gene with "commercial artists" -- a folkie from birth to tragic, untimely, heart-breaking, death.
