I am new to Mudcat Cafe's Digital Tradition.
Many of the songs have footnotes or references attached.

e.g.
Montgomerie SNR (1946)
Maclagan GDA (1901)
Chambers PRS (1842), etc., etc.

Where can I find an index/guide to the meaning of these references?

I don't know whether there's an abbreviation list somewhere. Those refer to:

Nora & William Montgomerie, Scottish Nursery Rhymes
Robert C. Maclagan, The Games and Diversions of Argyleshire
Robert Chambers, Popular Rhymes of Scotland

Hi, S Rhodes - the songs you refer to were submitted by the late W. Bruce Olson, who had a rather distinctive way of providing background information for songs. It can be a little difficult to translate at times, so it was included in the form Bruce used to submit it. Click here to go to Bruce's Website. You'll find explanations there, but you'll have to look around a bit. Bruce accumulated a wealth of valuable information - but he did it his way.

In most of the Digital Tradition songs, we try not to be quite so obscure, but then those other submissions often lack adequate attribution. There are some initials at the bottom of most songs - that's usually the initials of the person who submitted the song - put there so we can contact that person for additional information. I notice that early submissions from Bruce Olson are marked "WBO," but later ones are "MS." Maybe Susan of DT will come in and explain that one.

Ah, I should have known that.
Still, they look like Bruce's notation, so I wonder if Murray was submitting songs he found at Bruce's Website. The few I checked were submitted directly to the Digital Tradition, and were not first posted on Mudcat.

Murray sent in an extensive series of Scottish nursery and children's songs; I think these were from his own notes for a larger collection he was preparing, so abbreviations were not expanded. That was before my time, though. It would be useful to have a key somewhere; I recall being rather baffled by some of them myself, to begin with. Murray does still look in here from time to time, I think, as a "guest".

Hi all. Murray had submitted a great deal of material several years ago - mostly his Bairn's Songs collection noted by Malcolm. MS are his initials, by the way, not a reference to Saltsprings. And Bruce was W. Bruce Olson. Most of the notes on songs are whatever the contributor included.
