OK, some curmudgeon had to point this one out sooner or later. I just did a quick count of the number of current "Happy...Merry...Beautiful Gift...Australian...English...American Xmas threads.

All saying essentially the same thing.

Now that Xmas is winding down everywhere, is it possible to get a few of these babies consolidated, before the "good cheer" results in just one more milk of magnesia moment for those of us who aren't so enamored of the Xmas/Xtian thing here?

I think we've been pretty tolerant thus far, and haven't spoiled any one else's joyous, miraculous, thread. Howzabout it Joe Clones?

No need to get hostile there curmudgeon (btw, I didn't know it was possible to trademark and copyright the word "curmudgeon").

The "we" are "us". :)

...those of us who have had all the Xmas cheer we can take for one year, who would like to be able to have some nice respite here at Mudcat now that it is all over.

Sure, maybe it's easy to take aim at and flame an anon guest, even in the season of peace and goodwill.

But c'mon. Everyone has played nice so far. Xmas is over, yet there currently remains (by my count) 25 Xmas threads in the BS section alone. I know some Joe Clones will be stopping in at their end of their Xmas hol soon, so I just thought I'd ask if it would be possible to consolidate a few "Happy Christmas" threads with the "Merry Christmas" threads. Is that so awful?

Actually Sinsull, there isn't much to open except the Xmas threads right now, hence my polite request.

And a happy holiday to you too!

Guest,

I recommend you find other interests until the second of January and you'll find a cleaner better collection of thread titles on your return!

Us believers types are very tolerant of all the Christmas sucks threads, too. Fair's fair. If peace and fellowship is going to start somewhere, what better place than here.

Merry Christmas, Guest... (I will graciously accept all Happy Solstice greetings, or even a wish for a good, non-theological day.)

Looks like the next 360 days are yours... enjoy (if that's within your range of experiences..)

Jerry

Maybe we could have one Christmas Carol, incorporating bits from all the others which cover the same ground. Or one big Christmas Card.

Not a bad thought there McGrath. I wasn't suggesting that there be only one Xmas thread. Just that some of the repetitive "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Christmas" ones be consolidated. I thought the consolidation of repetitious threads on the exact same subject was something everyone agreed was A Good Thing for Mudcat. But apparently there are exceptions. Although I doubt that the same good natured request from a Mudcat member would have received such a ridiculous response as we've seen here. I mean really--do we need 15 threads with the exact same "Merry Christmas" headings on them, just because it is Xmas?

I would like to point out that Christmas is NOT over - rather it has just begun - as CHRISTMAS extends from the 25th of December until the 6th of January.

The anticipation and waiting of Advent is over. Now is the time to celebrate!

Look Slick, even Joe Offer himself would agree with you......hell, I agree with you. But it ain't gonna' happen. Joe would love to see one birthday thread a month too, but even with his best efforts toward the idea, that didn't happen.....and we tried several times. Sure there are a boatload of Merry Christmas threads and there will be quite few New Year ones as well. Most other holidays generate a few but nothing ar all like these weeks do.

Now you can go batshit and troll a bit and stir the pot and all but nobody including Max, Pene, Joe, and the Clones, are going to do jacksquat. It happens only this time of year, it goes away, it's no big deal. None of them are going to piss away time doing consolidations on anything like this.

If you're getting satisfaction out of trolling, by all means, please continue. If you're honestly expecting action on this, take a pill, relax, and try to reconcile that nothing is going to change on this.......it just isn't an issue......just a seasonal thing. Breathe deeply, find a good thread or two, and try to relax and enjoy yourself. Otherwise, have a Coke and a smile and shut the fuck up.

Oh yeah.........Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Sloppy Easter Eggs.

Spaw

Right--the usual selective editing is being done, ie the "Merry Crishna" thread has been moved from above to below.

Guest:

First of all I am not a Christian; but all I was suggesting was that if you don't like the threads that others put up, you could go off and do something more enjoyable for you. Anyway, if you want to suggest some thread-management, perhaps the most direct path would be to PM Joe.

But if carping floats your boat, pal, carp away!

Well, I hate to see all the Christmas threads, too. Over the last three days, there have been 28 threads running with the words "Xmas" or "Christmas" in the title - the most I've ever seen. I think we may be going through another one of those cycles where people seem to be compelled to start scads of new threads instead of simply posting to existing discussions. Some of these threads are legitimate discussions of Christmas songs or customs, but most are just everybody checking in to say Merry Christmas to everybody else, which is hardly profound or interesting.

Now, if I were to combine those threads, I would have to move every message individually. I do it with music threads when there's a reason to keep information together for use for reference - but I hardly think anybody in his/her right mind is going to search the forum for Christmas greetings two weeks from now.

So, I guess it's one of those silly, redundant things that people do. Maybe we all need to develop a Zen attitude toward Christmas.

This, too, shall pass.

-Joe Offer-

Sometimes it's just not worth the effort to try to tidy up things like this.

But in any case threads can develop a kind of narrative of their own, even when maybe they start out looking the same. Every now and again one turns into something people well might want to read over again, something more than a "Greetings from me" or "I hate Christmas" thread. For example:

BS: A Beautiful Gift or BS: Enduring the Holidays

oh Guest...there is lots of news you might prefer...mudslides in California, mad cow in Washington, earthquake in Iran, continuing wars..ebola, AIDS....quite a lot to counteract the Kodak moments...although maybe that is why we need KodaK moments..and maybe Kodak moments shining through all this misery is what keeps us going. mg

Sometimes, when so many musicians have got together at a session - maybe at a festival, for example - and they are getting in each others way, it's a good thing to hive off and start a separate session in the bar next door, and maybe play a slightly different type of music.

That applies here sometimes.

Reduncancy is a good thing. Imagine if we could only hear a song once.

Sounds like somebody got a lump of coal and is smarting over the rest of us who are enjoying the SEASON.

I understand though, I get the same way around Groundhogs day. All those damn gophers seeing their shadows. The endless TV specials, last minute shopping, baking gopher cookies. Who needs it?   Get me a big glue trap.

Watch out Jerry or some hairy arsed UK catter will come over and box you ears. Switches back into pedant mode. Boxing day was traditionally the day that tradesmen in UK were given their Christmas Boxes (Seasonal renumerations). Now go on enjoying the festive season mate.

GUEST: I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas. I agree that there are many threads that are repeatedly and repetitively redundant and they say the same thing again and again, over and over, once more and then again once more. So, in closing with this conclusion in a final sort of way to bring my post to an end, allow me to wish you a Very Merry Christmas.
