Subject: Aidan Crossey - slight reprise?
From: Aidan Crossey

Haven't been around these parts for a while ... there was a bit of very parochial angst got an airing here some time back and I thought I'd stay away for a bit and ... well, you just get out of the habit, don't you?

Anyway, a chance message from The Bard Of Harlow the other day caused me to peer round the door and see what was going on ... seemed peaceful enough (the barrelhouse piano didn't suddenly stop and the card-players didn't look up from their game), but I'd things to do and so I couldn't stay.

Tonight I got some time to spare and so I'll take a seat by the bar and order a drink. (Pint of Guinness with a Black Bush chaser, please...)

Can't say that I'll be as regular a visitor/contributor as I used to be in the past. But I reckon I'll poke my head in from time to time.

Now, those people who used to trade musings, anecdotes and (friendly) insults, such as Áine, katlaughing, Seamus (he of the OTHER Kennedy family - not as wealthy, but better musicians and better crack!) and others too numerous to mention, might be interested to know that I've been somewhat productive musically in the wee while since I've absented myself from here.

There are now three CDs on the stocks ... the last of which I completed today (hence my need to check in somewhere for a breather - ah, another pint! ... That'll do nicely!). Check out here for details.

Happy New Year to all of you! Keep on doing what you do as well as you do it - even better if you're able!

AC

Nice to see you again! (I enjoy your tunes.)

Just passing through you say? That's okay, it's good to have a life outside of here.

Peace, Mooh.

Mooh ...

Peace back at you ... mind you, in today's world (was it ever any different?), peace seems like a pretty unattainable goal. Worth aspiring t'wards though!

All the best for the imminent replacement of the calendar!

Aidan

Sorcha ... I'll try to do likewise (mind you, sometimes one gets drawn into these things without any intent!).

Joe ... thanks for the link. You're a good man!

Ron ... getting radio airplay? Moi? I'm surprised! I never imagined any of my stuff was of broadcast quality. What tracks have you put out over the air? Do your listeners like the stuff? (Just curious; I don't need the answers to feed a monomaniacal ego. I think!) PM me or email me ( aidan@paythereckoning.com ) if you think there would be any mileage for you in broadcasting any of my new stuff.

Amos ... How's she cuttin'?

Kat ... I've always appreciated your encouragement. Nice to hear from you again.

Seamus ... You show me yours and I'll show you mine! Seriously. You've got my address. Bung yours over and I'll let you have mine in return.

Ard Mhacha ... you're the music fairy and no mistake. Thon last video was a cracker. Me and the wee lad sat up on Guy Fawkes' night cos he couldn't sleep for fireworks and watched it. The next day he was running about through the house singing The Merry Ploughboy. Some great dancing on it ... when thon crowd joins the Kilf on stage it's a nice surprise. And yer oul' one who gives it a bit of the sean-nos footwork at the open-air session (with the border collie joining in!) - that's what the music's about. Pity we don't have more dancers at the sessions, but there you go!

That oul fella doing the reel with the dog was from a programme by De Dannan, made on the Aran Islands, I am doubled up laughing each time I see it.
Didn`t the very young Christy Moore on that Video, sing Jim Larkin like you never heard it. Ard Mhacha.

That three hour Video featured The Folk and Traditional music revival through the 1960s and 70s, and it brought some great musicians and singers to the fore, this period has never been bettered. Ard Mhacha.

I don't know about that, ard mhacha ... the twenties and thirties produced some great musicians (Coleman, Reavey, Morrison, Killoran) and I think we're in the midst of the new golden age - maybe not of folk music a la Dubs, Clancies - but certainly of trad stuff!

Aidan, I remember the 1950s being the dark ages of Irish traditional music and song, along came Ceoltoiri Cualann, and yes, The Clancys, the group which introduced many people to Folk.
I was caught up in the great revival and seen the young folk take to their native music with an enthusiasm which has lasted to this day, and long may it continue.
I have heard old timers say that they wouldn`t have had a look in at the earlier Fleadhs had they been competing with such talent as there is today.
Sure,Coleman and all of the other old musicians were famous in there day, but I bet they would have been astonished and proud to see and hear the marvellous new talent . Ard Mhacha.

Frank Harte was awarded the Sean nos award for 2003 by Irish TV Station TG4 last night, Frank sang Anna Cuain in English, [I have always heard it sung in Irish,] and it was never sang better.
Frank was accompanied by Donal Lunny and speaking to a packed Hall in Limerick, Frank gave great credit to those early singers of street ballads, who carried on the tradition.

Frank was praising the singers of those street ballads who until the 1960s revival kept the traditionl street ballads alive, this was a brilliant Programme nearly two hours of the best in music and song.
It`s congratulations to Frank who from time to time has contributed his great knowledge of street ballads to this Site. Ard Mhacha.

Ard Mhacha ...

I suppose the reality is that *now* is always the best time for the music cos that's when we're making it, listening to it, loving it or slagging it, but experiencing it whatever.

Our local session got together on New Year's Night (despite having been told by the governor that he didn't want us back until 8th January - we persuaded him otherwise). What a night. More tunes than you could count and then, at about 1.00 the singing started. The landlord got his bodhran out. All the bar staff did a number. More tunes. Two young fellas at the bar asked for "The LArk" and "The Kesh" and started into the sean nos dancing. The whole thing ended up at about 3.30. Memories that stay with you. To be in the middle of all that spontaneous crack!

Ard Mhacha ... regarding the dancers. Whether they were as good as yer other man or not is probably well debatable. Just good as a musician to see someone moved to their feet by your music (makes playing easier too ... makes the experience more complete!).

Maybe it was the drink as much as the music that drove them to dance, ard mhacha. But point taken, nevertheless. (Or pint taken?)

D'ye know that oul standby used by solicitors to defend their clients ... "Was your client drunk at the time of the alleged incident?" "He wasn't drunk yer honour, but he had drink taken."

I just spent some of my hard-earned DLA money on the Derrymacash mans CD,and I wasn`t disappointed, [thanks Tony, Blair that is].

His poetry, singing and instumentals are very good, give it a go, bye the way, there`s nothing in it for me, there will be no flying pints, it`s a long way from the big smoke to Freecrow.
Fair play to you Aidan.

A wee footnote that may please you, Eric Bogle on tour of Scotland nominated Shane MacGowan`s rendition of The Band played Waltzing Matilda as the best of all the perfomers that have sang the song, it was nominated No 1 peace song of all time in a recent survey by Radio Scotland, Roots 2 the future, and Spirit Aid.
