Subject: Lyr Add: THEY TELL US 'OWT (from Fivepenny Piece)
From: Cattail
Date: 06 Jan 04 - 06:58 PM

Hi Clansfolk

Sorry for the delay, I've had to transcribe it from the record.

recorded by Fivepenny Piece on the album of the same name,
circa 1972

THEY TELL US 'OWT
By Fivepenny Piece

CHORUS

Without a doubt, they'll tell you 'owt
Well they must think that we know nowt
Prices rising, not surprising
Just watch out, they'll tell you 'owt

VERSE 1.

There's many things that's come to pass
like frozen meat and North Sea gas
An' neither seems the same to us
and it's dearer than the proper stuff
My food has an artificial look
My shoes are made of plastic muck
And of me beer I've many doubts
But landlord smiles and tells us 'owt

CHORUS

VERSE 2.

Now t'money's changed from pence to P
So adding up will simpler be
For I know that I'm poorer now
'Cos it willna stretch as far somehow
Yet brother George 'neer worked a day
He goes on't sick and draws more pay
They say no one gets 'owt for nowt
Heh, that's a laugh they'll tell you 'owt

CHORUS

VERSE 3.

The hay they got were poor last year
An' that's what's making milk so dear
Potato crops I 'ear were small
The rain is blamed for that an' all
An 'ere's another that puzzles me
Why t'winter coal should dearer be
For I must pay or else go w'out
Coal chap comes round and tells us owt

CHORUS

VERSE 4.

The price of meat, and fish and pork
'As got beyond a bloody joke
For eat you must or else you'll die
So prices just keep soaring 'igh
I used t'enjoy some fish an' chips
But even they are for the rich
They'll sell you cod and call it trout
Take yer brass and tell you 'owt

CHORUS x2

Hope this is what you wanted

Best wishes

Cattail !

Have to dig the LP out and have another listen, they were good.
For the non-English, owt=anything, nowt=nothing, brass=cash.
