Subject: Mary Humphreys and Anahata - gig info
From: treewind
Date: 07 Jan 04 - 07:23 AM

I'm starting this thread for occasional postings to announce what's coming up shortly on our gigs list.
I hope somebody finds it useful occasionally!

The full current list is always on our gigs page

So to kick off, we have:
25 January: Hitchin Folk Club supporting Derek Brimstone.

I know it's only a support spot this time, but I'm really chuffed about getting a gig at Hitchin which is a big concert type club

Feb 23 - Red Bull, StockPort
Feb 24 - Ryburn Folk Club
There may be an interview on BBC GMR. More later...

Nice to see Hitchen are supporting help the aged, Derek has had more gigs locally since playing St Albans twice in a year.
Derek said he might pop in to see Jeremy Taylor on the 16th, but its already sold out.
Come and support his mate Shep Woolley in July.
Will you be featuring any guest singers or songs by local writers Anahata? It so happens that George is free! Then Mary can sing 'Pitter Patter'
Fancy a 'Spotlight' in St Albans next term?
Will you be dueting with Pete Coe then?

Well, Hitchin will be worth it, for Mary and Anahata - had my fill of Derek for 12 months.
"The rain is falling" is under quarantine until 19th March (album launch), Breezy!
Alio, if you reads this, do the Manchester folks a favour and interview M&A - they're bril! Not because I say so - or because Martyn W-R uses them regularly for Songlinks and other concerts. But I think English trad folk will owe Mary and Anahata. And soon.

Unfortunately the Stockport gig is the same night at Alio's programme so if there is an interview it will be prerecorded. We're in touch with Ali already - just waiting for a recording date from Paul Adams (new songlinks album) which might be the same weekend. So that'll be to Manchester via Cumbria...

Anyone listening to the radio show should be ashamed of themselves - they should be at the Red Bull. At least Ali should give us a plug for Ryburn the next night so the reprobates can make amends by coming to that instead.

I did - I checked the wrong calendar!
That's the second time today I've typed "cal xx 2003" instead of "cal xx 2004" to show the days in month xx.
Thanks for the correction. Yes it is the 2nd.

Time for an early night....

Does what mean we don't want a spotlight gig?
Lack of response, you mean?
$64k question: Do we have to put in 4 unscheduled appearances first to qualify?

No the 4 appearances rule does not apply to you as you have already qualified by having supported the St Albans club with your previous attendences abd contributions.
Does that mean you're up for it?
Get in quick while it lasts, now scheduling for after Easter till July
But do drop by if you're passing.
Have you got the Folk-song club prog Jan-Apr?

(a) your postings won't say "GUEST" in forn of your name
(b) you'll be allowed to send and receive private messages to other mudcatters
(c) you won't have to use my thread for talking business with Breezy...

It's a fortnightly club based as a sing a round, but every so often we have the last 30-40 mins for a guest. What I would like to do with you two, is on the other Mondays inbetween, start a short club of my favorite acts.So when I have confirmed some dates I will get back to you. If you can make it and join in our sing a rounds in the meantime that would be great. The Dates are Tonight 26/01/04 with Pagan Chalice 09/02/04
23/02/04   08/03/03 and 22/03/04 with Theo and friends. There are also plans to do Charity Mic nights on Saturdays fist one (all booked up) is on Sat 28th Feb. Hope to see you soon keep in touch Martin Dent.

The next spasm of activity, and some new festival info:

Monday 23 Feb: interview on BBC Greater Manchester Radio with Mudcat's very own Alio (Ali O'Brien). We are recording it in the afternoon - while the show is actually going out in the evening on we will be playing at the Red Bull, Stockport.

Tuesday 24 Feb: Ryburn Three Step Folk Club, Royal Hotel, Rishworth, W. Yorks.

On the Sunday just before that we are off to Cumbria to record two songs for Song Links 2 - another Martyn Wyndham Read extravaganza, this time featuring British and American versions of the same songs. Busy weekend coming up!

New on the list:
Holmfirth Festival: probably Friday night concert May 7, and English music and song cafe-style session on Saturday May 8, with Nick and Mary Barber from English Rebellion.

Otley Folk Festival No details yet.

Next week on Friday 5 March Mad Nanny (Letchworth)

It's been a successful three days's intensive up north. We've recorded our bits for Song Links 2, one of the songs in one take and it was the first time I've ever played it through without a mistake...! On a clear day (which it was) you can see Scotland from the Fellside studio at the top of Paul Adams' house! GMR interview with Alio went OK, gigs at Stockport and Ryburn were crackers, despite M62 blockage creating havoc and preventing some from getting to the Ryburn one.

New stuff for future:
April 6 - St Neots folk club
May 7 - Bacca Pipes, Keighley
May 8 - Holmfirth Festival details not fully finalised but looks like a concert at the Old Bridge Hotel with Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher, and Jonny Dyer and Vicki Swan (the latter a.k.a. kitchen piper of this parish) from Serious Kitchen. This should be fun - we know Bill and Dave from all those Martyn Wyndham-Read shows, and we met Serious Kitchen at Ely last week and they promise to be good fun too.

We did Readifolk and Oxford Folk Club last year. Where do you recommend? (preferably somewehere where you can recommend us!).

We need to pester Maidenhead for a gig - otherwise nothing booked, only vague plans to go gig-hunting...

Bugger! I guess that means Oxford and Readifolk will not be in a hurry to book you in the very near future. You could try Highworth, just to the east of Swindon. A small but friendly club without the usual inner circle atmosphere that some people rant on here and elsewhere. There are quite a lot of old folk who need to go at half time, but they are genuinely enthusiastic and open minded. Sadly, their main man, Bill Bailey, died suddenly of cancer last year, but they are determined to continue out of respect for the man. My band has played there a couple of times and we are due there again this July (at Bill's request). I'd love to recommend you because I've heard nothing but positive stuff about you, but that is a bit awkward because I've never heard you! Hence my question, will you be near Oxford in the foreseeable future!

Hey, there is the Wallingford Bunkfest, a nice little festival east of Oxford in early September, they will be putting their guest list together now. My band has performed there the last two years so I guess it will time for some other faces. They have a web site
here.

Regards

Peter

It occurs to me that if you're feeling adventurous we're at the Black Diamond club in Birmingham on Friday April 2. I think that's the nearest to you, for some liberal interpretation of "near".
