This Saturday, April 17 : Elsie's Bar - Edenbridge, Kent

Just noticed the programme for Holmfirth festival is up on the web site - we're in a Saturday afternoon concert with Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher + Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer. Are we looking forward to this or what?!

I don't usually post about gigs with our ceilidh band Fendragon here, because they're mostly private parties like weddings etc....
but this Friday we're doing a public Unicorn ceilidh in Hitchin, Herts so if you're in the area and feel like a bit of lively dancing come along.

Other news: we got our first online CD purchase customer today. Hooray! Break out the champagne...

Coming up:
Bacca Pipes, Keighley on May 7
Holmfirth Festival on May 8

As posted
elsewhere
we will be putting in a brief appearance at Market Rasen Folk Club this Friday. Just a preview for our gig there next year, as we'll be on an expenses-paid trip in the area anyway.

If you're around Cambridge at lunchtime on Tuesday 27th July we are playing at a thing called Cambridge Folk Week on Christ's pieces - the bit of green land next to Midsummer Common. That's with Dave and Gina Holland, the other members of our ceilidh band Fendragon and we'll be playing a mixture of English and French music.

Fendragon are also doing another public ceilidh next year - the monthly Meltdown series, on 12 Feb at: Clair Hall, Perrymount Road (B2028), Haywards Heath, W Sussex, RH16 3DN

And way ahead, The White Hart, Mickleby, N. Yorkshire, on April 23.

Next big thing: Song Links 2, August 2 at Sidmouth

Les - Mary's going to be visiting a few of the aforementioned animals (or really their owners) during the day before we see you.

I tremble with anticipation at the prospect of meeting an audience of excited sheep.

Mary says she's used to them - she comes from Wales, you see.

I am getting a bit worried about you Anahata if you are trembling at the thought of excited sheep. he he :-)

Is Mary going to sing in the Welsh Language ?

Songs in Welsh are a distinct possibility. Especially if requested.

Have put the 27 July Cambridge lunchtime event in the diary. There is a Cambridge gov site with a map that shows Christ's Pieces.
Look at: www.cambridge.gov.uk/leisure/mapblack.htm
Yes it really is mapblack, not mapblock, even though the map has some colour on it, must be the logic of a govenment department.
All totally irrelevant, the main point is GO ALONG IT WILL BE GREAT

Les,
If you don't fall in love with Mary's and Anahata's sound straight off, and don't buy at least 10 copies of "Sharp Practice" for yourself and friends, I will be disappointed, dismayed, disenfranchised and distraught. Never mind Moray, THIS is the album of the year in my book. Have chequebook ready; unless it bounces like a spring lamb.

I might as well make use of this thread to announce that we now have a song book for sale.

Lyrics and tunes for 21 of Mary's songs as recorded on "Through The Groves" and "Sharp Practice", in an easy-to-use comb bound A4 book (guaranteed to open flat on a music stand) with laminated totally beer-proof and coffee-proof outer covers. There's lots of pretty colour illustrations too, some of which are Mary's own hand drawn or painted artwork.

More on the Web site, of course. If you get there before I do to change it, the price is £8, not £10 as it currently says.

These are traditional English songs but many are not available in this form from other books as they have mostly been pieced together from words and music from different collected versions.

Catch us at Whitby and buy a copy!

Here's the contents list

Barb'ry Ellen
Bonny Light Horseman
Brigg Fair
The Broomfield Wager
Carrion Crow
The Faithful Sailor Boy
False Bride
Lady Maisry
Lovely on the Water
The Mermaid
No My Love, Not I   (When Fishes Fly)
Pride of the Season
Rosebud in June
Sheath and Knife
Spotted Cow
Through the Groves
The Turtle Dove
Unquiet Grave
Young Banker
Young Redin
Willie o' Winsbury

Next up: Frodsham folk club. After that we're appearing in a couple of events at Fylde on the Saturday (the programme has only my name in it but it's Mary and me really).

Whitby was great! Hard work but we had some good times too. A special highlight was the Sussex ceilidh where we provided the bottom end of the band (cello & piano) to complement Dan Quinn, Will Duke, Vic and Tina Smith on tinkly treble instruments... so much fun we all want to do it again. Anyone want a proper old fashioned English thump band for a ceilidh in Cambridge, Sussex or all points between?

Beginning of 2005 is lining up nicely now with new gigs at The Friday 13th club in Harrogate and The Song Loft in Milton Keynes.

This Friday we're at the Waveney club in Lowestoft for the second time. Not that their site has any info, though there's a review of last time we played there.

Sorry - Fylde was a last minute opportunity which we grabbed because we'd be in the area after Frodsham, and we were only expecting to do one day - as soon as we received a working program (only two weeks ago) I phoned Alan to say we couldn't do Sunday but the amendment didn't make it into the programme nor apparently any last minute announcements.

We were definitely there on Saturday as advertised, in fact we had a great day!
Really sorry we missed each other.

Fresh (?) back from Otley, where we had a great time and enjoyed staying with the wonderful Harry Scurfield (there seems to be nothing he can't play on an Anglo concertina), we're looking forward to our guest night this Friday at the Everyman in Saxmundham, Suffolk.

2005 - here we go (Happy new year to all our readers!)

Jan 9: Old Rose and Crown Folk Club, Walthamstow, N London.
Our second return to a club full of old friends, not counting the number of times we've dropped in for a floor spot.

Jan 13: Bideford Folk Club, Devon
Another a re-booking, a terrific little club in North Devon, followed by a weekend in Cornwall with friends and the expectation of sessions and clubs every night...

Jan 18: St Neots Folk Club, Bedfordshire.
This is the third time too...

Jan 20: Redbourn Folk Club, Herts
Hooray! Been waiting a long time for this one!

Other news:

Thanks Hamish - it was truly a shock to see you there. A pleasant one, of course...

Prickle Eye Bush is on the new CD, with an instrumental arrangement that sounds like we've unearthed a previously undiscovered Bach Brandenburg concerto. To my Anglo concertina is added fiddle and recorder played by the truly excellent Dave and Gina Holland. Very different from the Bellowhead version!

Here we go...
As announced in another Thread the new CD Floating Verses is with us and selling fast, with a good few going last night at Hitchin where we were supporting Artisan (who were terrific BTW - if you haven't heard them catch them soon - they're on a final tour)

Anyway, coming up for March is:
March 3 - The Anchor folk club, Byfleet
March 4 - Seaford (run by Mudcatter "Vectis")

Then Mary's taking advantage of a bit of a gap in the gigs to get her sinuses drained, which is a day and a night in hospital, general anaesthetic job, and which means she won't be able to sing for two weeks, but in the long term should cut down on sore throats and other singer-unfriendly symptoms.

March 19 I'm running a melodeon workshop as part of melodeons and more in Mendlesham, Suffolk.

Baldock and Letchworth at the "Caffeine" bar on April 1 - but that's another and very busy month...
