Subject: RE: BS: When is Bums Night? From: Jim McLean Date: 14 Jan 04 - 05:24 AM You'll find the answer above in the music thread. The thing to remember is that his birthday is the 25th of January but it is usually celebrated on the nearest Saturday, normally after the 25th. |

Subject: RE: BS: When is Burns Night? From: Wolfgang Date: 14 Jan 04 - 10:23 AM Maybe I should rather post this question in the music section, but since the people here are so knowledgeable... In the song 'Bonnie Woodhall' there is a line that I never did really understand: I will wed with dear Annie near Calder's clear bum Could you make it clear to me? Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: When is Bums Night? From: GUEST,weerover Date: 14 Jan 04 - 10:31 AM Wolfgang, I think you will find the word is b-u-r-n, a Scottish word for a stream (as in the English "bourne"). wr. |
Subject: RE: BS: When is Bums Night? From: Bobjack Date: 14 Jan 04 - 10:33 AM I prefer Wolfgang's version. |

Subject: RE: BS: When is Bums Night? From: GUEST,weerover Date: 14 Jan 04 - 03:15 PM If Wolfgang's version is correct, I would guess that Calder is a recent colonic irrigee. wr. |
Subject: RE: BS: When is Bums Night? From: Jim McLean Date: 14 Jan 04 - 05:11 PM I think Wolfgang's having a laugh! Burn is the same word as brunnen, by metarthesis. |

Subject: RE: BS: When is Bums Night? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 14 Jan 04 - 06:14 PM BTW, I would like to nominate Wolfgang for a Mudcat Award - for trying to Threadcreep a BS thread back toward musical topics... |
Subject: RE: BS: When is Bums Night? From: Wolfgang Date: 15 Jan 04 - 07:29 AM I was fooled like perhaps some others and did read 'Burns'. I was just a bit puzzled why only Jim gave a sensible response whereas some others were completely off topic in their posts. But then it is Mudcat and I have stopped wondering about off topic posts. After some more time I saw what had happened. I then wanted to see the two similar thread titles in close juxtaposition to see how similar they are. But I cannot get a thread from the BS section up beside the other (Burns) thread. That's why I posted and changed the subject line (see above) to replace 'Bums' by 'Burns'. And so I could see why I had been fooled. I could have sent an empty post or a 'refresh' for that purpose, but I decided to look in the song database for a line in which replacing 'burn' by 'bum' made remotely sense. Another possible candidate was ...a bonnie bum;'Tis pleasant there to be. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: When is Bums Night? From: Wolfgang Date: 15 Jan 04 - 07:42 AM BTW, Jim, our old poetic word for 'Brunnen' is 'Born' which is even closer. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: When is Bums Night? From: Bassic Date: 15 Jan 04 - 07:58 AM Dont forget, if you want your threads mixed in the "old way", i.e. one single list rather than B.S. being below the line, just amend your choices in the "Membership" link on the title bar at the top of the page. I still prefer my Mudcat in the "traditional" way :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: When is Bums Night? From: Bobjack Date: 15 Jan 04 - 08:25 AM I still don't know when you lot have bum's night.Burn's night is on a different, more sensible thread. We are having another bum's night tonight at the Marlborough club. |
