The old Dylan one to the tune of "Parting Glass" is nice - I think it's called "Restless Farewell."

Of course, it ends, "...and bid farewell, and not give a damn." So you'll probably get people saying it's "inappropriate." May those people descend to the Muslim Hell and be sodomized by demons.

Peter.

One simple song which seems to endure over the decades is "Now is the Hour"

From memory:

Now is the hour, when we must say goodbye
Soon you'll be sailing far across the sea
While you're away, oh please remember me
And when you return you'll find me waiting here

Here is a page with lots of lovely info, including a far nicer set of words (which may not scan to the tune) translated from the Maori language.

"Bound for Canaan" is one of my favorites, as is good old "Auld Lang Syne," original tune please. When my dad and I sing together, though, we usually end with Sir Harry Lauder's "It's Nice to Get up in the Morning," since we are both well known as slugabeds.

One of my favourites is Singers' Farewell by Mal Waite. The words would be highly appropriate for this 'Do' too.

Perhaps you could modify this song from David Stone.

The Soldier's Farewell
Words and Music - David Stone/Darryl Landry/Jadairpublishing/SOCAN
A young Scottish soldier posted in 19th century Halifax sadly bids adieu...

Chorus
I Say Farewell Now my time is through
The evening sun is sinking down
As darkness settles o'er these waters
It's away that I am bound

I see stone walls above the harbor
And the ship that waits for me
The horizon the peaceful waters
Soon across them I will be

I see the tall masts all down the shoreline
Ships as far as the eye can see
It's aboard one I'm bound for leaving
To a place that I care not to be

Here on King's Wharf I stand silent
As the wherry ferries o'er to me
I must sail now, back home to England
But here I leave the very heart of me

<break>
A battle's raging o'er the sea
I must fight for King and Country
That thought scares me half to death
But I must go now, for I'd never run away

So goodbye ladies and goodbye comrades
Your fair city regretfully I leave
Though I cursed it on my arrival
Now there's no place on earth I'd rather be

I Say Farewell Now my time is through
The evening sun is sinking down
As darkness settles o'er these waters
It's away that I am bound
As darkness settles o'er these waters
It's away that I am bound

At my high school graduation, Terri (a some-time Mudcatter) sang Joni Mitchell's 'Circle Game'.

Hi, Purple - I grouped this thread with our other parting song threads - the Parting songs thread has the widest variety. You may want to try a Digital Tradition Keyword Search (click) for parting - we have some 260 parting songs in our database. I guess you can't use "parting glass" songs for a school graduation, but I have to say that When First We Met is my current favorite parting song.
Good luck to you!

This year's our final year in school, and two girls junior to us are planning to sing and play the guitar at what we call the 'farewell' -graduation kind of thingy.

They're planning to do 'As Tears Go By'... and want another song. Any suggestions? Something sad... and maybe slow... and sentimental. Leaving-school-ish. Or not... just a song that makes you feel really sad, and makes you cry! Preferably not too unknown :-).
