Subject: Lyr Req: lyrics for 'a goat becoming a bodrahn' ? From: GUEST,Jody Conrad Date: 28 Jan 04 - 12:00 PM I saw a performance by an Irish chap last year in Chester Nova Scotia. His name escapes me, but he played a tune on the bodrahn telling the story of a goat becoming a bodrahn. The song was written from the perspective of the goat (poor fella). Anyone heard of it or know where I could get the tune/ lyrics? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: lyrics for 'a goat becoming a bodrahn' ? From: GUEST Date: 28 Jan 04 - 12:07 PM I've found the name of the song, "When I Grow Up," but evidently you are not the only one who is having trouble identifyiong the performer! I found the following request on this page: "We have received the lyrics for "When I Grow Up", a song about a goat who desires to become a bodhran when he passes on. Unfortunately, we as yet have not been able to determine authorship of the lyrics and/or song and consequently do not have permission to reproduce them on The Bodhrán Page. If you are the author of the lyrics for "When I Grow Up", or if you can put us in touch with the author, please contact us." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: lyrics for 'a goat becoming a bodrahn' ? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 29 Jan 04 - 08:02 PM Ah but what about the tunes? I got the words of "when I grow up" some time ago, but no tune, so I just sing it to the tune of "All for me Grog" which is as good a 6/8 jig tune as any, and the words seem to scan. If anyone can do a midi of either this one or "Wrap it Up" I'd be eternally grateful, being one of they posers wi' a bodhran meself. Tattie B |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: song about 'a goat becoming a bodhran' ? From: Young Buchan Date: 16 Jul 11 - 11:28 AM Back in the 70s Mike Henry used to sing this - note the third verse: She came from the mountains, her stockings were black; I'd like to be tickling the small of her back. She came from the mountains, her stockings were white; I'd like to be tightening her garters. While walking the road to sweet Athy, I saw an old petticoat hanging to dry; So I took off my trousers and left them near by To keep the old petticoat warm. Paddy McCarthy, he had a fine goat. He tied it up with a rope by the throat. Along came some fellow and stole off its coat, And now it's a bloody great bodhran. I met a girl and she was quite fair. Her only drawback was her surplus of hair. She came from Athy in the County Kildare, And she shaved before Mass every Sunday. Maggie McCarthy she said unto me, 'I never will marry, no never,' said she. But now she is happily married to me And the mother of seventeen children. Tune is approximately The Limerick Rake, with a chorus of mouth music. |
