I've got a similar instrument (open back...is yours?). I like heavier strings -- fuller sound, and the length keeps the action easy.

As with all these questions it is surely a matter of personal taste, with regard to how the instrument sounds and what the action is like.I no longer play a long neck, but find that two of my banjos like a 9thou first but the banjola is happier with a 10 thou first. I would think you could 'Get Away' witha heavier gauge on a long neck.

I use medium gauge Addamas strings. Not because they are particularly good but because that is all I find. Elderly will make up sets for if you specify the guages you want. Deerings Long scale strings are awful, The best were Vegas but they are no longer manufactured.

Search Long Neck Banjos and a wealth of string info will come your way.
