The old "arms race" between the former Soviet Union and the United States may be over, but has the United States -- the nuclear giant of the world, and hence the nation in the strongest position to take a leadership role -- acted in "good faith" to eliminate its own nuclear weapons and encourage others to do the same? Do the actions of the United States since that treaty went into effect in 1970 indicate any intention to honor its provisions?

Sadly, the answer is no. Instead, the United States -- with its overwhelming military advantage in the world, conventional and nuclear -- seems bent on continuing to create, and threaten the use of, nuclear weapons.

Jacqueline Cabasso, executive director of the Western States Legal Foundation (a public-interest organization that monitors and analyzes U.S. nuclear-weapons programs) sums it up this way: "The U.S. is spending more money on nuclear-weapons research and development than ever before, giving its nuclear arsenal new military capabilities and elevating the role of nuclear weapons in its aggressive and unilateral 'national security' policy." Cabasso cites ongoing work on such weapons as a "Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator" as clear evidence of U.S. intentions to pursue nuclear weaponry, not work toward its elimination.

Perhaps more frightening, the Bush administration's January 2002 Nuclear Posture Review laid out a nuclear policy that calls for the development of low-yield or so-called "mini-nukes" and integrates nuclear weapons with conventional strike options. The review discusses possible first-use of nuclear weapons, even against non-nuclear countries if the United States believes a country may use chemical or biological weapons against the United States or its allies. The review's language -- "U.S. nuclear forces will continue to provide assurance to security partners, particularly in the presence of known or suspected threats of nuclear, biological, or chemical attacks or in the event of surprising military developments" -- not surprisingly makes the world nervous.

The STRANGEST security action I have ever heard of is now riding in Isreali buses.

Since there is no Hamrati Orthodox Jewish law that makes it forbidden...

They are now allowd to hang great big bags of pork fat inside the buses to dissuade suicide bombers from blowing themselves up on the bus since their mangled bodies would then be mixed with pig fat - which is an abomination to muslims.

Almost everyone gets uncomfortable in contemplation of murder. The stridency one hears from Bush supporters, and the use of extreme rhetorical evasions and hammering of ad hominem arguments against their despised "liberals" (meaning fellow Americans less inclined to violent solutions) is that they suspect they might somehow be particpants in large scale murder, and the notion of being responsible for the death of innocent children, mothers, and unarmed civilians in pursuit of what is actually only a political objective (no matter how well justified) is enough to make anyone queasy. Of course you aren;t allowed to say you feel queasy about possibly being associated with one or more murders if you belong to the cultural group. So you get strident instead. Me, I get downright heartsick in contemplation of murder, and I do not mind saying so. Supporting Hussein was also supporting large scale murder even when the government was doing it... supporting Bush is supporting a different set of large scale murders.   They are both as loathesome as they can be, IMNSHO. Christian murders and Muslim murders are equally ugly and equally insane.
USing religion as a justification is as bad as using politics or economics as justification. Let us face the issue squarely. Murder is afoot on both sides of the line. Let us call it for what it is. And if you choose to be lead by murderers, I hope you can find peace somewhere.

I have spoken against both Liberals and Conservatives in Canada. I don't hold much with party politics. I know it helps make democratic systems workable, but it takes away something valuable in the process. Both are using their Faith as the impetus for heinous crimes against humanity. I think the world is dangerously overpopulated, but there are better ways to limit it sans annihilation through war. An overzealous religious world leader professing Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, or Taoism, is extremely dangerous. The
"Heavenly voices" heard through prayer or meditation, from the different "Gods/Deities" of each religion to the leaders of the world, lead to irrational decisions. Imaginary "forces" should have no place in making life and death decisions for any peoples of the world, especially decisions by their governmental leaders.

Both the US and Russia, were quite a way down the road on nuclear disarmament, when the process came to halt due to the activities of both India and Pakistan.

As to the United States being, "-- .... bent on continuing to create, and threaten the use of, nuclear weapons.", Don is not telling anybody anything new here. What he goes on to describe has existed since the mid-1960's.

In short, what is being discussed here are tactical nuclear weapons. The UK unilaterally renounced the use of CB weapons in the 1960's, the USSR did not and spent vast sums developing them. During the "cold war", to counter that threat to western Europe, NATO responded by stating clearly that such weapons would be countered with the use of tactical nuclear weapons.

The world should be no more nervous about this now, than it may have been for the last fifty years. In all that time, I have not missed one wink of sleep over it, and I would say that that holds true for the bulk of the world's population.
