I think that was something to do with greased cartridge paper. The drill was you had to bite the end with the ball in it off, prime the firing pan and pour the rest of the powder down the muzzle, then spit the ball and paper into the muzzle and ram the ball home.

I heard that something similar took place in India (Sepoy Revolt, 1850?). Had to do with rubbing rendered pig fat on weapons or something like that. Heard or read it years and years ago. (My memory ain't what it used to be and never was.) One of those stories that improves with age I guess.

my summary: Status of that story (originating in the Phillipines long before the foundation of Israel) is undetermined. To me it seems that a very old story (which might have a grain of truth in it or not) is retold and adapted to the new times. I don't believe the present version.

I read the column by Mr. Blankley and when I got to the part about Bush's greatness being shown by realiziing that it's unnecessary & undesirable to listen to the UN I first thought, Gee, I always believed (along with the well-known Founders) that a decent respect for the opinions of mankind was a good thing, and my second thought was that this puts me 200-odd years more conservative than DougR.

Life is full of surprises.

Both the US and Russia, were quite a way down the road on nuclear disarmament, when the process came to halt due to the activities of both India and Pakistan.

The review discusses possible first-use of nuclear weapons, even against non-nuclear countries if the United States believes a country may use chemical or biological weapons against the United States or its allies."

In short, what is being discussed here are tactical nuclear weapons. The UK unilaterally renounced the use of CB weapons in the 1960's, the USSR did not and spent vast sums developing them. During the "cold war", to counter that threat to western Europe, NATO responded by stating clearly that such weapons would be countered with the use of tactical nuclear weapons.

The world should be no more nervous about this now, than it may have been for the last fifty years. In all that time, I have not missed one wink of sleep over it, and I would say that that holds true for the bulk of the world's population.

"Heavenly voices" heard through prayer or meditation, from the different "Gods/Deities" of each religion to the leaders of the world, lead to irrational decisions. Imaginary "forces" should have no place in making life and death decisions for any peoples of the world, especially decisions by their governmental leaders.

Almost everyone gets uncomfortable in contemplation of murder. The stridency one hears from Bush supporters, and the use of extreme rhetorical evasions and hammering of ad hominem arguments against their despised "liberals" (meaning fellow Americans less inclined to violent solutions) is that they suspect they might somehow be particpants in large scale murder, and the notion of being responsible for the death of innocent children, mothers, and unarmed civilians in pursuit of what is actually only a political objective (no matter how well justified) is enough to make anyone queasy. Of course you aren;t allowed to say you feel queasy about possibly being associated with one or more murders if you belong to the cultural group. So you get strident instead. Me, I get downright heartsick in contemplation of murder, and I do not mind saying so. Supporting Hussein was also supporting large scale murder even when the government was doing it... supporting Bush is supporting a different set of large scale murders.   They are both as loathesome as they can be, IMNSHO. Christian murders and Muslim murders are equally ugly and equally insane.
USing religion as a justification is as bad as using politics or economics as justification. Let us face the issue squarely. Murder is afoot on both sides of the line. Let us call it for what it is. And if you choose to be lead by murderers, I hope you can find peace somewhere.

For a different perspective on President Bush, go to the Drudge Report (DrudgeReport.com) and read Tony Blankley's column in the Washington Times. The guy depicted in that article bears no resemblence at all to the fellow "most of you folks" describe (abut not including Sorcha!) :>)

It's a very elegant solution (if it works). I have to applaud them on that one.
