Hello from Thailand!

We're over her on holiday enjoying lots of sun, massage and smog. The Thais are wonderful people, helpful and continually smiling. Not much folk music around though, but we did do a very brief spot in an 'Irish Pub' last night. Well it made a change from the Dutch Blues Band who had the stage.

We're in Bangkok at the moment, but we'll be travelling down south to the islands soon. Lots of love to everyone, but we can't bring you all a stick of rock.

Les and Maggie

Did you travel by bicycle Les? Are you in hiding because The Oberon was shut last sunday? It's safe to come back to Hull, honest.

Hazel - more like a local lager, Singha (lion) or Chang (elephant). We've quite taken to San Song, what the locals call whisky but is in fact a very nice rum.

Jude - Here's a massage from Maggie - push - pull - twist - pummel - strokey strokey. There now, all better.

We'e ridden on two elephants (well it may have been the same elephant twice, we're not too hot on elephant recognition). We're now just leaving Kanchangaburi, where our room was actually on the River Kwai (a sort of floaty rafty thing). But it's been so hot here (over 100 degrees - and you try to find the degree sign on a Thai keyboard). We've been leading an unsuccessful search for the Fridge on the River Kwai.

I guess if this singha needs a drink then lager will have to do! My Les says 'if it's percent proof H will drink it' Oh sorry! I've been too long away from this part of the PC, doing everything on SAGE and paying the VAT man, all with LK's help! Now that's a real friend. One minute an accountant then a web site creator and I'm sure there'll be another song or two soon. DO you plan to return ? There was snow on my garden until this afternoon when the rains came.
Got to go - a friend has opened a bottle of wine and I must assist. Enjoy the rest of your travels - PS Les, I walked past your place yesterday afternoon and only the kitchen triffids appeared to be in residence! Hazel

We're now leavng Chiang Mai (it's not the leaving of Chiang Mai that grieves me...) on route back to Bangkok for Les's flight back on Thursday.

Chaing Mai is the best place ever! We've had three fun-packed days here. First day we went to a national park (foresty/jungley) with a super temple. We did our own mini-trek to a couple of waterfalls but we were amazed to find that we were the only people in the whole national park adventurous (daft) enough to do this.

The next day we went to the National Conservation Centre and hospital that we'd heard about in England. What a great place! They look after sick elephants (wouldn't want to clean up after one of them), the wounded, the trunkless, the blind and insane... There was a pregnant female (19 months gone only 3 to go) knitting baby clothes, and a baby elephant in a sling (got a bit trampled). They look after old and retired elephants are here so Les felt quite at home.

make a trunk call

Maggie is returning to Chiang Mai to train as elephant "Mahout" at Lampang Heffalump Conservation Centre and hospital - honestly! 3 day course.

On our last day we were a bit tired so we stayed in Chiang Mai for the day. But it was the the street(s) market at the end of our street, so we did the total shop-till-you-drop experience. We may be somewhat differently dressed the next time you see us. The whole place turn into a giant pound shop but with things that you actually want. The most stunningly incredible bizarre bazaar you could ever want to see. Geoff - you must get your next outfit here!

Linda - somene called Janet and son Tom may stay the odd night at my house while her place is being done up - very last minute request from her.

Well - it's nearly midday so we're up for organising a Singha Round!

Actually the above message is a bit of a cod. As we were writing it in Chiang Mai we were unable to post it there. So we put it on a floppy and brought it by train to Bangkok. Possibly one of the most-travelled Mudcat messages ever!

It's now our second day back in Big Smokey and it's Les's last full day before flying back to the UK. You bet his arms will be tired.

We visited 'Jim Thompson's House' yesterday (now don't say Jim Thompson weren't with 'ee last night) and did some shopping. Excellent festival clothing at about a quid and a half a piece. Looking weirder by the day. Get the info on Jim Thompson yourselves 'cos we're far too busy.

Now off to see the Emerald Buddha by khlong (canal) and nosey round the Royal Palace (as you do).

Linda, I dont think the 'Ull police would have caught him after a week. Catching thieves in the act would stretch their abilities.

Well half of us are back in the UK. I'm back on my own computer, separated from Maggie by all those miles (big sigh).

The flights back were pretty uneventful, marked only by a constant lack of information. The second film on the Bangkok/Amman leg was Master and Commander - Far Side of the World, a film I'd missed in England, despite being an avid Patrick O'Brien reader. Not bad, but I much prefer the books. They concentrated on thrilling seafight stuff (which was done very well) to make it pretty much a blokes' film but it would be hard to get into a film all that the book contains. I even stopped being pedantic after a while.

And then herded like sheep at Amman, Jordan onto a bus for an overnight stay at the Alia Hotel (dinner provided, but strangely towels only available on request) and called in the morning more herding and onward delivery to Heathrow. There was mild excitement at Queen Alia Airport with a power failure to the security x-ray.

Then another opportunity to watch Master and Commander - Far Side of the World - this time in French! And home to rain and loud borish people.

Well I'm looking forward to some music and to boring you all with photographs. And before you ask I didn't bring any of you back any rock.

Les
