Still a bit later in the day...
The original recording was by a band called Jason Crest back in 1968.
Jason Crest (formerly The Good Thing Brigade) were a Tonbridge, Kent based psychedelic rock band, active from around 1967 to 1969.
Despite releasing five UK singles on Philips from 1967 to 1968, (including a cover of The Move's "(Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree"),
the band were never commercially successful and disbanded towards the end of 1960s when their contract with Philips expired.
However, the singles "Black Mass", "Turquoise Tandem Cycle", ""(Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree" and "Place in the Sun" have all appeared
on the Rubble collection of British psychedelia and Freakbeat, and the band has garnered a modest cult reputation.
The song on Jason Crest's fourth single, "Waterloo Road", reached #1 in France when the French singer, Joe Dassin,
covered it under the title, "Les Champs Élysées"(1969).

Walking down the street today
I saw a girl across the way
I asked her where she's going
And she said, "Come with me"
She took me down this avenue
Where I met the folks she knew
And there we stopped and chatted
And passed the time away

Down Waterloo Road
Down Waterloo Road
Friday night Saturday
Any night or any day
You'll find what you're looking for
Down Waterloo Road

Lower down this cellar where
We met this happy feller
Playing cake-walks on his guitar
All night long
His pickin' sounded scratchy
But his music was so catchy
That we all got up and joined him
And we sang this song

Down Waterloo Road
Down Waterloo Road
Friday night Saturday
Any night or any day
You'll find what you're looking for
Down Waterloo Road

Now the birds are cheeping
And we all feel kind of sleepy
The morning tide is rising
And the moon has gone
But still the feeling lingers
And still I hear the singers
As I walk along the avenue
And I sing this song

Down Waterloo Road
Down Waterloo Road
Friday night Saturday
Any night any day
You'll find what you're looking for
Down Waterloo Road

Down Waterloo Road
Down Waterloo Road
Friday night Saturday
Any night any day
You'll find what you're looking for
Down Waterloo Road

In Dublin Waterloo Road is a parallel road to Raglan Road, both off Pembroke Road. Paddy Kavanagh lived between the two. Don

yes I also remember the song Down Waterloo Road , it makes me feel very nostalgic thinking of it as I live in Russia at the moment; but as a Londoner, it's one of my favourite places.

For several years I lived on Waterloo Road in Marsfield (suburb of Sydney, Australia) and I don't expect anyone will write a song about that street, either.

I was wondering about that. I live just off Waterloo Road in London and I don't think it's particularly songworthy!

Down Waterloo Road was written by Mike Deighan and Mike Wilsh - my brother`s stage name - and the song was actually written about the road where we were born in Burslem Staffordshire.

I stumbled upon this site a bit late in the day but thought I would add a little more information regarding Waterloo Road.I was the jug player in Jugular Vein from 1967 until our last performance to date, at The Battersea Beer Festival 2002.Waterloo Road was was composed by Mike Deighan and Mike Walsh. Our own recording was made at Studio 2 Abbey Road in May 1976 but was not released until 1978.The other members of J.V. are still active in music. Mike is still playing with The Temperance Seven.Max Emmons still fronts his own band at THe Brewery Tap Brentford on Thursdays.Tom Edwards the Bass player is Sec. of the south Wales M.U.and is still playing from time to time.
Regards Barry.

I found the recording of "Down Waterloo Road" on an old reel-to-reel tape purchased at a car boot sale and was intrigued as to who was singing it. The search engine threw up this thread. It's performed like a "pub singalong". Other recordings, by other artists on the tape, were around the late 1960s. The lyrics are:

Walking down the street today
I met a girl across the way
I asked her where she's going
And she said come with me
She took me down this avenue
Where we met the folks she knew
We all stood round and chatted
At the time of day

Down Waterloo Road
Down Waterloo Road
Friday night Saturday
Any night any day
You'll find what you're looking for
Down Waterloo Road

She took me down this cellar
Where we met this happy feller
Playing ?cake-walks? on his guitar
All night long
His pickin it was scratchy
But his music was so catchy
We all got up and joined him
And we sang this song

Down Waterloo Road
Down Waterloo Road
Friday night Saturday
Any night any day
You'll find what you're looking for
Down Waterloo Road

La la la la la laa la la laa la
La la la la la la la la

La la la la la laa, la la laa la
La la la la la la la, la

Now the birds are cheeping
And we all feel kind of sleepy
The morning tide is rising
And the moon has gone
But still the feeling lingers
And still I hear the singers
As I walk along the avenue
I sing this song

Down Waterloo Road

La la la la la la la, la

Down Waterloo Road
Down Waterloo Road
Friday night Saturday
Any night any day
You'll find what you're looking for
Down Waterloo Road

(Chorus repeated three more times and fading out…)

I think seeing the search results there is a problem:
"Waterloo Road": original version as by Smacka Fitzgibbons or Jason Crest or both of them?
Greetings from Belgium,

WATERLOO ROAD is sung by Jason Crest on the album "Collected Works of Jason Crest," Wooden Hill CD #006, 1998.

I don't know whether that's the original recording.

Joe Dassin: LES CHAMPS-ÉLYSÉES (en anglais) (1969)

I was walking down a street today
And I saw a girl along the way
I asked to where she's going
And she said "Come with me"
She took me down this avenue
Where we met some friends she knew
And there we start and stopped awhile
And passed the time away

Down the Champs-Élysées
Down the Champs-Élysées
Friday night, Saturday
Any night or any day
You'll find what you're looking for
On the Champs-Élysées

Sitting in the small café
We heard the street musician play
Some waltzes on his accordion
All night long
He's playing sound wheezy
But the melody was so easy
Now we all got up and join the man
We sang this song

Down the Champs-Élysées
Down the Champs-Élysées
Friday night, Saturday
Any night or any day
You'll find what you're looking for
On the Champs-Élysées

Now the birds are cheeping
And we all feel kinda sleepy
The morning sun has risen and
The moon has gone
But still the feeling lingers
And still I hear the singers
As I walked along the avenue
And sing this song

Down the Champs-Élysées

Any night or any day
You'll find what you're looking for

Joe Dassin: LES CHAMPS-ÉLYSÉES (1969)

Je m'baladais sur l'avenue
Le coeur ouvert à l'inconnu
J'avais envie de dire bonjour
À n'importe qui
N'importe qui ce fut toi
Je t'ai dit n'importe quoi
Il suffisait de te parler
Pour t'apprivoiser

Aux Champs-Élysées
Aux Champs-Élysées
Au soleil, sous la pluie
À midi ou à minuit
Il y a tout ce que vous voulez
Aux Champs-Élysées

Tu m'as dit "J'ai rendez-vous
Dans un sous-sol avec des fous
Qui vivent la guitare à la main
Du soir au matin"
Alors je t'ai accompagnée
On a chanté, on a dansé
Et l'on n'a même pas pensé
À s'embrasser

Aux Champs-Élysées
Aux Champs-Élysées
Au soleil, sous la pluie
À midi ou à minuit
Il y a tout ce que vous voulez
Aux Champs-Élysées

Hier soir deux inconnus
Et ce matin sur l'avenue
Deux amoureux tout étourdis
Par la longue nuit
Et de l'Étoile à la Concorde
Un orchestre à mille cordes
Tous les oiseaux du point du jour
Chantent l'amour

Aux Champs-Élysées
Aux Champs-Élysées
Au soleil, sous la pluie
À midi ou à minuit
Il y a tout ce que vous voulez
Aux Champs-Élysées

Dave Benton used to be a resident at my old folk club at the Railway Tavern, Blackheath. I can remember him singing the son there - I can also remember Jugular Vein. These days you can find Dave working in Hobgoblin Music's London shop in Rathbone Place - he's the follically challenged one on the right in the staff picture.

A good old album. If anyone has chords/lyrics then please post them. My dad and Sue Taylor used to share a bill with them and Johnny Joyce (R.I.P) and tour the London pubs.

Tony,
Down Waterloo Road was written by Mike Deighan, who was in a group called Jugular Vein, issued on an LP of that name in 1978, if you are really desperate for the words, I'll see if I can dig them up.
Incidentally, Mr Deighan also wrote something called "Rosie Broke the egg on the Washboard." which seemed mildly amusing at the time I ripped it offt, but doesn't seem so now!

I'm looking, please, for lyrics, music and composer for a song 'Down Waterloo Road'. Used to be sung by Dave Benton, in and around London back in the late 70's and early 80's (he can't remember - I've asked).
Chorus:
Down Waterloo Road, Down Waterloo Road,
Friday night, Saturday, any night and any day
You'll find what you're looking for down Waterloo Road,

Nah nah nah nah nah nah
Nah nah nah nah
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Nah nah

Thanks
Tony Hillyard
