Subject: RE: Lyr/Tune Req: Waterloo Road From: GUEST,Guest, Maclenharsta Date: 23 Sep 10 - 10:08 PM Still a bit later in the day... The original recording was by a band called Jason Crest back in 1968. Jason Crest (formerly The Good Thing Brigade) were a Tonbridge, Kent based psychedelic rock band, active from around 1967 to 1969. Despite releasing five UK singles on Philips from 1967 to 1968, (including a cover of The Move's "(Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree"), the band were never commercially successful and disbanded towards the end of 1960s when their contract with Philips expired. However, the singles "Black Mass", "Turquoise Tandem Cycle", ""(Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree" and "Place in the Sun" have all appeared on the Rubble collection of British psychedelia and Freakbeat, and the band has garnered a modest cult reputation. The song on Jason Crest's fourth single, "Waterloo Road", reached #1 in France when the French singer, Joe Dassin, covered it under the title, "Les Champs Élysées"(1969). |

Subject: Lyr Add: WATERLOO ROAD (from Jason Crest) From: GUEST,Pete Merrett Date: 21 Jan 06 - 12:06 PM I found the recording of "Down Waterloo Road" on an old reel-to-reel tape purchased at a car boot sale and was intrigued as to who was singing it. The search engine threw up this thread. It's performed like a "pub singalong". Other recordings, by other artists on the tape, were around the late 1960s. The lyrics are: Walking down the street today I met a girl across the way I asked her where she's going And she said come with me She took me down this avenue Where we met the folks she knew We all stood round and chatted At the time of day Down Waterloo Road Down Waterloo Road Friday night Saturday Any night any day You'll find what you're looking for Down Waterloo Road She took me down this cellar Where we met this happy feller Playing ?cake-walks? on his guitar All night long His pickin it was scratchy But his music was so catchy We all got up and joined him And we sang this song Down Waterloo Road Down Waterloo Road Friday night Saturday Any night any day You'll find what you're looking for Down Waterloo Road La la la la la laa la la laa la La la la la la la la la La la la la la laa, la la laa la La la la la la la la, la Now the birds are cheeping And we all feel kind of sleepy The morning tide is rising And the moon has gone But still the feeling lingers And still I hear the singers As I walk along the avenue I sing this song Down Waterloo Road Down Waterloo Road Friday night Saturday Any night any day You'll find what you're looking for Down Waterloo Road La la la la la laa, la la laa la La la la la la la la, la La la la la la laa, la la laa la La la la la la la la, la Down Waterloo Road Down Waterloo Road Friday night Saturday Any night any day You'll find what you're looking for Down Waterloo Road (Chorus repeated three more times and fading out…) |

Subject: RE: Down Waterloo Road From: Dave Bryant Date: 10 Mar 04 - 10:20 AM Dave Benton used to be a resident at my old folk club at the Railway Tavern, Blackheath. Subject: RE: Down Waterloo Road From: mandomad Date: 02 Mar 04 - 03:30 PM Tony, Down Waterloo Road was written by Mike Deighan, who was in a group called Jugular Vein, issued on an LP of that name in 1978, if you are really desperate for the words, I'll see if I can dig them up. Incidentally, Mr Deighan also wrote something called "Rosie Broke the egg on the Washboard." which seemed mildly amusing at the time I ripped it offt, but doesn't seem so now! mandomad |
