Subject: Lyr Add: BARBARA ALLEN (from Fred Jordan) From: Roberto Date: 02 Mar 04 - 10:47 AM Please, someone to check if this transcription is correct. Thank you. R BARBARA ALLEN As recorded by Fred Jordan on A Shropshire Lad – English folk singer, Veteran VTD148CD, ballad recorded 1952 It was one day in the month of May When the flowers they were bloomin' And Johnny on his sickbed lay For the love of Barb'ra Allen And slowly, slowly she came up And slowly she came nigh him An' all she said when there she came: Young man, I think you're dyin' Poor Johnny died on one fine day And Barb'ra died on the morrow Johnny died for Barb'ra's love And Barb'ra died for sorrow On Johnny's grave there grew a thorn On Barb'ra's grew a briar They tangled and they twisted then For the sake of one another Look up, look up by my bedside Go find a bangle hangin' With my gold watch and silver chain All left for Barb'ra Allen |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fred Jordan's Barbara Allen From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 02 Mar 04 - 02:58 PM Almost exact. In verse 4 Fred sings "tangled and"; and I think he begins verse 1 line 2 with a rather abruptly swallowed "And", but I might be wrong about that. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fred Jordan's Barbara Allen From: GUEST Date: 02 Mar 04 - 04:45 PM I think it's on his new Veteran issue- great double CD |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fred Jordan's Barbara Allen From: Dave Bryant Date: 03 Mar 04 - 06:54 AM If you're referring to the "Remembering Fred" CD - I gather that the first four tracks on the second CD are ones that I recorded on my first stereo cassette deck at Isobel Sutherland's old Folk Club at Groombridge. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fred Jordan's Barbara Allen From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 03 Mar 04 - 10:28 AM Tracks 5-9 according to the notes. I went to the Junction a few times in the mid '70s with friends who still lived down that way. Excellent club. I recall seeing Shirley Collins there (probably the only time I saw her solo), and the "Pump and Pluck Band" I think it was. |
