Well Port Fairy was BIG again. We watch from nearby. Can't get a look in but our friends fill us in as they pass by. We just visited after the party was over and explored the rock pools on the deserted beach. Lovely. Joy

Rich-Joy - I'd been given names of a lot of old folkies who were rejected or boycotted.

Anyway, I'll make my own fun with my friends. But where will I meet/hear all the rejected folkies - if they are planning to be at Woodford, forget that, I can't cope with the weather.

I'm with Sandra on the "fun with friends" aspect. The National and
(yes) Woodford, in spite of the cold/heat/moisture provide a chance
to get a lot of friends together for a good time. The booked artists
give a bit of structure to the days...

I've got the details for those Blue Mountains house concerts handy now:

Sat 27th Mar - Jez Lowe
Sun 18th Apr - Martyn Wyndham Reid & Iris Bishop
Sun 9th May - James Keelaghan

All are 2-5pm $20/$17 - contact 02 4784 1244 (bh) or 02 4759 1916 (ah)

"The Fabulous Phoenix Folkie FringeFest" does have a certain alliterative charm!! (try saying THAT after those Home Brew workshops)

Sandra Said : "Rich-Joy - I'd been given names of a lot of old folkies who were rejected or boycotted."

My first thought was : isn't it a-bit-of-a-worry when it could then be implied by non-selection, that we're all getting :
"too old - EVEN for Folk" ???!!!

Then again, I remember that it was said back in the 80s that Folkies were all "Fat, Fucked and Forty"!!!

Hmmmm ... don't go there ...

So here's to just singin' an' jawin' with yer mates, anyway - WHEREVER! (tho' the Northern Territory this June wins out for me!!)

Cheers! R-J
(Oh, to be "40, fitter and f(th)in" again!!!)

We'll be at the National this year for the first time as part of our first ever trip (& tour ) down under. We're lucky enough to be appearing at the festival & are really looking forward to it. 10 more get ups till we fly.

G'day pat&ken,

... We're lucky enough to be appearing at the festival & are really looking forward to it. ...

That's the way of it ... the Festival has to balance between old favourites and new & different performers! There's only so much room (and one less performing venue this year because one space has been given over to regional displays. If we kept running just the old favourites we would never be exposed to new influences (some might prefer that ... but ... ).

Anyway, what are your stage personae ... and where/when will we hear you?

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Sorry about the non-post! Did we ever decide when and where to meet, or do we leave it up to chance and keep missing each other? I know from experience it's possible to spend the whole weekend bumping into the same people, and miss others entirely. My on-line patchwork group has a meeting system for large craft/quilt shows - same time, same place 3 set times a day. I will be going to Canberra the previous weekend and working in the office Monday evening, Tuesday free, then Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. That will be my volunteer shifts finished. If anyone wants it, PM me for my mobile phone no.
Cheers

one possible meeting place is Hrothgar's hymn singing Easter Sunday morning.

Another place is the Singing Session in the ex Restaurant (now renamed the singing room or something similar) every night after 10pm cos some of us will be there every night (me, JennyO, freda & Canberra Chris definitely, maybe Chris M?, Joybell??

But we also need a list of Mudcatter performers so we have other places to meet.

I'm still wondering if people want to try to meet at the pub in Civic. The only trouble is that I can't be there Wednesday, and not many others can either, I suspect. However, I'd be up for Thursday night. Anyone else?

what about starting thursday night at the pub in Civic - that would introduce people who have only met in cyber space, then we can organise our own further stuff through the festrical eg at hrothgar's hymns

and which pub was it n what time?

G'day JennyO,

That was at: the Wig and Pen in Alinga Street (roughly halfway along the [~] southern side). It's a restaurant/real beer brewery with a nice line in their own brews - on the Festival side of the City centre.

It seemed to work pretty well last year ... I'm sure I can't blame their brew for my getting lost in a looping Canberra circuit ... that's happened - stone cold sober - at least once in every visit over the past 38 years!

Regard(les)s,

Bob

I'll be at the singing sessions for sure. They were my favourite place last year. I'll also be part of the "Oldtime Radio Show" with Hildebrand and O'Leary - they'll get me up for a third harmony part on some bits. Might get a look-in on some of their other spots too. Joy

Wig and Pen, ah yes, that was it. I know there is actually an opening concert that night, but I'd still prefer the pub - plenty of time later to catch up on all the action of the festival. So who else can be there on the Thursday night?

I can be there on Thursday night, it was fun last year. I seem to remember a rousing rendition of "Oh Sir Roger do not touch me" much to the amusement of the local drinkers!
I don't think that will be on the menu at Sunday's hymn session.
Cheers

So do Pat & Ken's gigs. So too Greg & Greg's gigs.

Come on, the rest of you Catters, what are you doing?

And will there be any catters from other states present?

Hey, Bob are you in current contact with Stewie & the others? will they be there?

sorry Sandra, but Stewie's free-of-charge production (also drawing on a dozen "no-charge" performers from the NT, WA, SA and Qld : no mean feat in itself!), was one of those that didn't get a guernsey from Mr McDonald ...

Too bad, coz that Paul Stewart KNOWS STUFF and his many earlier Festival "workshops" (or "themed presentations" as he now calls them) are famous Oz-wide, in the pre-Canberra Folk Scene ...

(PS so we're all choosing to travel to Darwin in June, with its beautiful balmy tropical nights, instead of Canberra at Easter)

Regardless of what Mr Bolton asserts the same old names from the outlying states do keep getting the guernseys. And you should have seen the load of old cobblers sent to Stewie as explanation for rejection of his workshop (I still call them that).

I like the idea of a Not the National Fringe thingy. Apart from that it's the NT in June for me out at the Mary River Oh!! See you there R-J.

Phil.

Darwin would certainly be warmer than any other event I might get to in June. I wore both my jackets + my shawl in Albion Park last June. And the wind did nasty things to tents & tarps.

And with the price war going on, flying might also be affordable.

We should probably have a second meeting time and place for those who can't make it Thursday night. It needs to be somewhere that hasn't moved (unlike the Troubador) - maybe the session bar again at a certain time each day? Any other suggestions?

Jenny

BTW, John and I will probably be camping in the performers area this year, near the line of trees.
