Subject: BS: great prognosis
From: kendall

For the last two years I have been thinking that the radiation I had ruined my voice. Now, with the help of a specialist, I find that it is not a case of damaged vocal cords, but a case of "Dysphonia". Common among singers, and quite curable. All I need is a good voice coach.
Hoofrigginray!

Kendall, it really is too bad no one suggested a voice coach before now...

OK, I'll behave. This is GOOD NEWS! I'll expect you to be singing up a storm in a few months (if not sooner), doing a world tour and recording a new CD ("Overhauled"). Haul out that friggin' guitar and get to work!

YEE HAW!

The thing is, Jeri, no one else has had the training in voice problems. My E.N.T. is one of the best, but he sees no sign of cancer, so, as far as he's concerned, I'm cured. This other specialist is trained and has the equipment to do detailed analysis. He was able to show me on the video film what was happening, and what should happen. It could be a long road back, but, it will be worth it.

Kendall, what IS it, exactly? Do the muscles around vocal cords sort of spasm so the cords don't vibrate properly? If so, you may be surprised at how fast things improve with a bit of training in techniques to overcome the problem. (She says, not really having a clue what's involved. Just hoping.)

Jeri, thats exactly what the deal is. Those muscles have decided to constrict on their own, and I have to talk them out of it.
Jacqui, there are many good voice coaches here, he recommended one in particular, so I'll set up with her.

Kendall

what great news... singing is everything...

I heard an interview with Pavarotti once, where he said that the way he prepares for a performance is to sing very gently, softly and quietly through the day. it helps his throat relax and his voice gets a good gentle oiling before it soars.

good luck with your singing practise, Kendall, and enjoy every golden drop of it!

best wishes

freda

That's very good news, I'm pleased for you.

Let me also mention that you are really in for quite a ride, I know. When you do find the right coach, he, or more likely she, will likely put you to work in a manner that you are not used to. I must say that, having NOT met you personally yet, I DO hear that you have a reputation of someone who is a very good "rider." The process by which you learn these new skills is very complicated and they are not easy. And, it's VERY mental. You'll need to have your brain involved constantly.

I've seen some singers succeed in this and I've also seen some fail. I'd recommend success over failure ... but then you've already demonstrated many times that you do also.

CHEERS and BLESSING for you. Bob

I find myself always dissapointed around Christmas time when my voice goes out. Its a bummer not to be able to sing the carols I love so much. It takes a month or so for it to go away. I can't imagine finding out that I wouldn't be able to sing again. So this if fantastic news. I haven't had the pleasure of hearing your work but will be looking ofrward to your full recovery!

Anyone who listens to National Public Radio during the daytime may know a lot about "dysphonia" if they listen to the Diane Rehm show. She has this problem, which took a long time to diagnose, though everyone who listened to her heard it coming on. As it happens, one of the specialists in this she ran into years later was a fan of hers and always wondered if she knew what she had.

The treatment she goes in for is an injection of the botulism toxin into the vocal chords. It can be painful, and it isn't always as effective after each treatment. She usually disappears for a few days and comes back sounding much better. Her voice seizes up and is quite scratchy. Like some people have said in discussing it, as she works to get the words out, they want to "reach out and pull the words from her."

My problem is the muscles that control the vocal cords tend to constrict when they shouldn't. I understand that can be cured by exercises.

Maybe you should try speaking in a Southern accent, Kendall -- it's gotta be easier on your vocal chords than your Down East twang!!

Here is a link to Diane Rehm's page at WAMU about her spasmodic dysphonia. Lots of articles about how she is working through it. Here's one short interview in the Washington Post that is linked from the above page:

    Diane Rehm
Host, "The Diane Rehm show," WAMU radio

I went to doctor after doctor after doctor, and they all told me that nothing was wrong with my voice, nothing was wrong with my throat or vocal cords and that I didn't have cancer. For something like eight years they told me it was all in my head.

The day came when I had to get off the air. I did my show. It sounded so awful. Afterwards, I had to run downtown to moderate a program on gossip. Three hundred fifty in the audience. Four people on the stage. And I had to moderate this. As soon as it was over, I dashed out of there. I went right back to the studio and said to my boss, "I'm out of here."

I really came as close as people come to having a nervous breakdown. For four months, I simply sat at home on tranquilizers, on muscle relaxants, things to help me just sit peacefully and quietly. I didn't want to talk to anyone because I was so embarrassed. Finally our internist said, "I don't care what these other doctors said, I'm sending her to Johns Hopkins." Within one hour at Johns Hopkins, they diagnosed spasmodic dysphonia. They treat it with Botox injections straight to the vocal cords.

Because I speak as slowly as I do, number one, people who are just learning the language appreciate it so much. And, number two, they tell me that it's so refreshing to have moments to think about what's being said. And they judge me to be thoughtful because my speech is slow.

If you go back, and I have, to some of the shows I did 15 years ago, my voice was quicker, my thoughts flowed more easily. Maybe because I am slower now, I do take more time to think about what I have to say. And maybe in this world of one-second images and rapid-fire conversations, I do offer something that's different and, maybe, better.
    -- Interview by Amanda Temple

OHHHHH NOOOOO!

This is wonderful news Kendall. Now get off your butt you Jackass and go get some therapy, there are at least several songs I want you to teach me.
