Subject: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Kim C Date: 08 Mar 04 - 10:23 AM I inherited a watch from my dad. Nearly four years later I decided it was time to sell it - he enjoyed the watch and it's a shame for it to sit unloved in a box. So I did some research on it, had a jeweler look at it, watched some of the listings on eBay, and have now put it up for auction. It's a model 15505, stainless steel w/gold, it runs, I have the box. A similar watch just sold on eBay for $1300, without box or papers. A prospective bidder offered me $550 to sell the watch outright. I don't think so. If he's so wanting to buy it, why don't he bid on it? I don't expect to get $1300 necessarily, but I think $550 is too low, especially with the box. I don't want to ask too much for it, but I also don't want to take too little for it. I want the final price to be fair to everyone. Does anyone out there know anything about Rolexes, or do you have any negotiation tips? Many thanks--- Kim C |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Rapparee Date: 08 Mar 04 - 11:09 AM I use a sundial myself, but if I were you I'd go check on it at the local public library. If you can't, PM me. (Look at that, wouldya? A pendulum has a specific period for it's swing. I wonder if that could be used in clocks...hmmmm....) |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: ced2 Date: 08 Mar 04 - 11:28 AM The Rolex collectors that knew are now resident in either the Armley Hilton or the Wakefield Dorchester as guests of H.R.H. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 08 Mar 04 - 04:37 PM My watch cost £5 and it keeps perfect time. I'd hate to have something on my wrist that some nut might want bad enough to kill me. Or that cost so much that, if I accidentally left it behind in the washroom, it would spoil my day in the least little bit. |

From: Cattail Date: 08 Mar 04 - 07:21 PM Hello Kim C, you might like to have a look at this site. http://www.bogoff.com/ (Just can't seem to get that clicky maker to work) Even if it doesn't help you it's nice to just look at the beautiful timepieces and the workmanship that is in them. Cheers Cattail ! |

Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: bflat Date: 08 Mar 04 - 07:46 PM Kim, There is a huge market for used Rolex watches. I see ads in the NYTimes at Tourneau Corner saying they will buy them. You can't buy a new one for less than $1799, I believe, last time I looked, and that was for an all stainless steel model. I've seen ads in other newspapers also. Where do you live? You may want to sell it in an metropolitan area where demand is higher. Good Luck. Ellen |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Peace Date: 08 Mar 04 - 08:28 PM I would like to be a rolex collector, but I don't want to pay for 'em. Anyone got any ideas? |

Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Kim C Date: 08 Mar 04 - 11:01 PM Ellen, $1799 for a new Rolex would be a steal. I'm in a metropolitan area, and there's plenty of buyers - I just figured eBay would be the most effortless option. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Rapparee Date: 09 Mar 04 - 02:49 PM If you go the ebay route, set a minimum bid. |

Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Teribus Date: 10 Mar 04 - 03:48 AM I have a collection of one, a stainless-steel SeaDweller, bought in 1978 for work - it was the only watch in the world at the time that was guaranteed to withstand a helium decompression. In the time I have had it, it has been worn every day, never sent for a service (which now would cost at least double what I paid for it), and has kept amazingly good time (steady loss of less than 2 seconds a day - which puts it well inside chronometer standard) Made up our own ad for it: Rolex Oyster Perpetual Guaranteed not to; rust, bust, pick-up the dust, tarnish, burn or splinter. Amazingly good piece of kit. |

Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Mar 04 - 11:01 AM A really expensive guitar sounds better and is more enjoyable to play. A really expesnive car makes driving much more enjoyable, gets you there more safely and so forth. And they may look prettier too, but that's not the main thing. A really expensive watch? Prettier to look at, maybe. But no better at keeping time. What's the attraction? |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Teribus Date: 11 Mar 04 - 07:26 AM Most modern watches for some time now have been battery driven - the Rolex is still clockwork and very reliable. In the 26 years that I have had mine I have never had to wind it once. The one I have is functional rather than pretty to look at, accurate enough to navigate with and while I was diving it had two great safety advantages: 1. It did keep accurate time, important for decompression and in case of following emergency procedures (both strictly time based) 2. I always knew that if anything happened to me, there would always be some mercenary bastard up top who would come in and get me, even if it was only to salvage the watch. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Kim C Date: 11 Mar 04 - 11:24 AM Not all Rolexes are flashy. The one I have is actually pretty nondescript. Rolex does all that certified chronometer stuff which does make them keep better time. A well-made watch will last for many, many years. I own a 100-year-old pocketwatch that still runs like a top. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: GUEST,Hugh Jampton Date: 11 Mar 04 - 11:49 AM Watch, no!! but I have got a BOLEX 8mm Cine camera going begging. Any takers?? |

Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: GUEST,Hugh Jampton Date: 12 Mar 04 - 11:56 AM Eric the red, It is not very successful either. This time of the year it suffers from EXPOSURE!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Peace Date: 12 Mar 04 - 05:46 PM I shutter to think of THAT! |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Neighmond Date: 12 Mar 04 - 09:26 PM Rolex made its major claim to fame based on their oyster case. Their case is second to none in keeping out water and dust, so long as the crown and back gaskets are properly mantained, and the crystal is intact. The movement is (usually) simply a nicely finished automatic mechanical movement. Any well finished movement can be adjusted to run with a great deal of accuracy, it all depends on how much time you care to spend on it. They are easier to adjust for Isochronism and position errors because they are free-sprung (they have no index, but rather rating nuts on the balance wheel like the higher grades of older pocket watches.) A special wrench is needed to adjust the star-headed nuts, keeping the worst of the hacks from attempting it. I do have to say that there many companies that can make just as accurate and well finished watch for the same money-I have an old (1940's) Leonidas Chronograph (powered by a Valjoux 72 movement) that would give any Rolex a run for its money. Besides that, Rolex is an absolute pain in the ass to get anything from parts-wise, and they charge more for one overhaul than I would for three or four! If you want or need the superb protection that Rolex cases provide, that's one thing, but if you simply want a nice well made watch that isn't mass produced who-knows-where, shop around. Cheers! Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: GUEST,Me Date: 13 Mar 04 - 01:21 PM I used to go kayaking wearing some no name watch - it got soaked, I'd put it in the airing cupboard let it dry out, and it lasted years. No one ever mugged me for it. If you can afford to collect Rolexs can you really be a folkie. "Oh horny handed son of soil, What is the time upon your dial, I am not sure but some folk say, A rolex tells the time of day." A quote from Bob Copper ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Peace Date: 13 Mar 04 - 07:08 PM "Oh horny handed . . ." (blame the hand why dontcha?) and I lost it with that thought. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Blackcatter Date: 13 Mar 04 - 10:49 PM I got lucky at last year's Rolex 24 hours at Daytona, and NOT in a car - well, ok in a car, but I wasn't racing, well, near the end I was, but a different kind of racing and well, being a gentleman I came in second . . . I've got a Seiko quartz that needs a battery every 4 years or so, has been down to a underwater depth of 80 meters, and is about 10 seconds fast a week. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Rolex collectors out there? From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Mar 04 - 12:18 PM Every time I see this thread title, I picture a guy with 16 watches on his arm, coming up to me and rolling up his sleeve, saying, "Hey, buddy, wanna buy a watch?" It also reminds me of a sign I saw outside a store in Greece last summer, Genuine Fake Watches. I'm happy with my Timex, thankyouverymuch. It takes a lickin' and... it still keeps pretty good time -Joe Offer- |
