Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: r.padgett Date: 02 Dec 18 - 03:21 PM Yes I sing the Golden Vanity learnt from the Tony Rose vinyl ~ I sing two verse before the chorus although Tony does sing it at a fair speed ~ Could get rather long with one verse I feel Ray Tony Rose was fine singer, concertina player and guitarist with mastery of Traditional ballads and songs |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Reinhard Date: 02 Dec 18 - 03:24 AM I do like young Scottish singer Iona Fyfe's version of The Golden Vanity from her forthcoming EP Dark Turn of Mind. Her 800 words essay on the song's history alone is worth perusing. |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Dave Hanson Date: 01 Dec 18 - 11:05 AM Lonnie Donegan did a good recording of this song, he was very well into folk music and very knowlegable. Dave H |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: GUEST,Musikverlag Mittelgebirge Date: 01 Dec 18 - 05:14 AM Hello everybody, I just uploaded a vinyl rip of "The Golden Vanitee" by Tony Rose and "his distinguished singing friends" to Youtube. It was released on the Trailer LP "Young Hunting" in 1970. The "distinguished singing friends" are identified on Mainly Norfolk as Peter Bellamy, Heather Wood and Royston Wood of The Young Tradition - who may or may not have broken up at the time of the recording - plus June Tabor, John Kirkpatrick, Dave Calderhead and Kevin Sheils. What a lovely chorus! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJZl_tmnyfk |

Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: GUEST,Spot Date: 25 Jul 18 - 07:17 PM There is a version 'feat' Gordon Bok on Spotify. You can download Spotify free and listen to the song free. Just search under Gordon Bok, artist. It is from a Minneapolis concert. Not sure if this is the one you are looking for. Surprising how much 'folk' there is on Spotify. |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Jim Carroll Date: 25 Jul 18 - 01:36 PM No No version unfortunately - it seems to have sunk without a trace You can't trust these feckin' apprentices!! Jim |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 25 Jul 18 - 12:08 PM Jim Agreed re Lowlands of Holland, of course. Does that mean there’s a version of Golden Vanity in Joyce also - or have I lost the plot? Regards |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Jim Carroll Date: 25 Jul 18 - 12:03 PM An American version contains two lines that justify claims the folk song is high art "Some were playing cards and some were playing dice And some were standing round giving good advice" Anybody who has worked in a factory or on a building site and watched the men playing cards or dominoes during the dinner break, must visualise that scene as clearly as I do Brilliant! Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 25 Jul 18 - 11:54 AM The first time I heard "Golden Vanity" was on a BBC radio show in 1960 sung by Pete Seeger. It was an hour long show featuring just Pete his banjo and 12 string guitar. I taped the show but it's on a reel to reel tape. |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Jim Carroll Date: 25 Jul 18 - 08:53 AM “men enough in Galway/Galloway...” That's Lowlands of Holland' Martin - a relation of Bonny Bee Hom (Child 92) A lovely version of one of the Tunney family singing that in the box already (Brigid sang it, but all her grandchildren make a nice job of it so I might use one of them I came across a nice Wexford version of 'Captain Ward and the Rainbow' in Ranson's 'Songs of the Wexford Coast' - unfortunately no tune, but I'm working on that I'm staggered at what's turning up - 'Queen Eleanor's Confession, and Broomfield Hill f.c,o,l Thanks Jim |

Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 24 Jul 18 - 06:25 AM Jim The one in Joyce is the well-known “men enough in Galway/Galloway...” song. It’s in his “Old Irish Music and Song” and notes its earlier publication in Ancient Irish Music. Regards |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Jim Carroll Date: 23 Jul 18 - 01:36 PM Reihardt I found that one (we have the book) Extremly frustrating - it quotes a conversation including a couple of verses - no information of souce I think what I am going to have to do is wait till the Irish folklore department comes out of hinernation I am going to have to ask them which one Tom Munnelly (my source and late friend) was referring to For anybody interested, i've now found over fifty examples of recordings of the Child ballads from the tradition and several in print A little overwhelming Thanks for your help Jim |

Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Jim Carroll Date: 23 Jul 18 - 11:48 AM Thanks Pamela I don't think either had roots in Ireland I've been though all the major American collections we have on the shelf I'll check though your list Much appreeciated Jim |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Pamela R Date: 23 Jul 18 - 11:16 AM >I thought there might be an American version taken ove by Emigrants -drew a blank on that too Jean Ritchie had it as "The Golden Vanity" Alameda Riddle had it as "The merry willow tree" I'm not aware of whether either of them was descended from Irish vs Scottish ancestry. I can't recall a primary field recording from Ireland offhand, the geographically closest I can think of is Dodie Chalmers of Turriff, Aberdeenshire. But it could be under so many different names it's hard to search for it. See the long list at: http://www.fresnostate.edu/folklore/ballads/C286.html P Also |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Jim Carroll Date: 23 Jul 18 - 10:22 AM There's a bit of serendipity if you like - even if it is only from someone trying to sell something I am at present assembling a file of recordings of Irish versions of the Child ballads for distribution to interested parties I am told there is a recording of an Irish source singer singing The Golden Vanity - damned if I can find it As I'm trying to show the historical existence of these ballads in the Irish tradition, I'm not interested in modern renditions which are copies from other traditions I would also be happy to find a published text and tune I wonder if any ballad buff can help I thought there might be an American version taken ove by Emigrants -drew a blank on that too I know there is an early 20th century parody of the ballad from Joyce's Ancient Music of Ireland entitled 'Lowlands Low' but nothing more Any help would be very much appreciated and anybody interested in a copy of the project is very welcome to have on - PM me Thanks Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Anglo Date: 20 Aug 10 - 10:43 PM To answer Kendall above: Caryl P. Weiss lived in Texas for many years but moved back east not too long ago, 2 or 3 years maybe. She lives around Annapolis now and is still singing. Possibly she has done the odd reunion gig with the Liverpool Judies, but I heard Teresa Pyott just had bypass surgery. Caryl was a featured performer at the Chicago Maritime Festival this last February, which is where I last saw her. |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Larry The Radio Guy Date: 19 Aug 10 - 11:35 PM The first version of the song I ever heard was Lonnie Donegan's. I think it was the "b" side of either My Old Man's a Dustman, or Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It's Flavour. |

Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: MGM·Lion Date: 19 Aug 10 - 04:41 AM A propos this & another current thread, Folk Learned At School: The Golden Vanity was in one of the school songbooks ~~ I think one edited by Walford Davies, Master Of The King's Music in 1930s ~~ in use at Northampton Town & County School in about 1942. It is a widespread and well-known [even to children] ballad, by no means obscure, and so of course much recorded. ~Michael~ |

Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 20 Apr 09 - 06:38 PM I have been told that the late John Jacob Niles recorded this one, probably in the 1930's or '40's. Can anyone confirm? |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Murray MacLeod Date: 20 Apr 09 - 06:35 PM Roger McGuinn's version of Golden Vanity is superb, as of course is everything that Roger McGuinn has ever recorded. Most of what Martin Simpson has recorded is magnificent as well, but unfortunately not his rendition of Golden Vanity, about which the less said the better. |
Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: bodgie Date: 20 Apr 09 - 06:32 PM There is a wonderful Australian version recorded from Simon McDonald and released as a field recording in the late 1950s on 'Traditional Singers & Musicians of Victoria'. It has been reissued. I subsequently recorded his version on my 1969 LP 'Limejuice & Vinegar' (EMI then reissued on Larrikin). It has (last week) been included in my 10CD set 'Australia: Its Folk Songs & Bush Verse' (ABC Music). The tradition lives and rolls down through time. |

Subject: RE: Recording of Golden Vanity From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Oct 05 - 09:07 PM My father sang a very nice version of the song.
