Subject: BS: Health: Chicken-bone in the throat
From: GUEST,Elkewid
Date: 25 Mar 04 - 02:27 PM

For 2 days (48 hours) now, I have had a small chickenbone in my throat. I dont have any problems with breathing or eating, it is just a little bit irritating.

Will it disappear soon, do you think?
How long time can it stay there?
Can it grow into the throat-meat and sit there for many months?

Any advice how to get it away?

I think it would be a simple matter for a doctor to remove it and it would be safer to have it done. The risk is if ity gets jarred in a certain way it might do something harmful, I expect.

It needs to come out for 2 reasons, firstly it could becme dislodged and end up in your lung, and cause all kinds of problems, or it could cause an infection.see a doctor to get it removed.

you might try swallowing a few pieces of white bread to push it down but I would see a doctor.

Hi!
Thanks for the answers.

No, I have not been to a doctor. I am afraid he/she will torture me 5-10 minutes by putting something down my throat, without finding anything, and then tell me to wait until it disappears by itself.

I have tried eating bread and bananas and drink a lot of water, but it didnt help much. Today I ate a springroll, and some of that hit the chickenbone, because I felt a pain for a second in my throat. So I hope it moved the chickenbone a little.

Do some of you have or have heard about experiences with bones in the throat?
Have you maybe heard about cases where people had it for a long time, and then it disapperead?

Its probably very normal, when you think about how many in the world who eat chicken and fish. I find it hard to believe its dangerous.

Get to a doctor. Do it NOW! This could do several things, none of them good, such as:

1. cause scarring and eventual closure of the throat
2. work itself loose and find its way to your lungs, causing a pneumonia which might very well kill you
3. cause infection and septicemia -- which can kill you and hospitalize you
4. work its way into the tissues and migrate to your vocal cords

as well as other things.

The doctor will put you under an anesthetic, and if not ask for one.

How many other people this happens to is irrelevant. This time it's happened to you.

But, then again, it's your life, your throat, and if you want to end up breathing through a stoma and burping your words, it's not my concern.

OK, Rap, that answers my question to you. Hey, whoever you are, it could KILL you. Go to a f#ckin' hospital emergency room and then let us know, OK? Don't mean to sound unkind here, but I have other things I want to worry about and you are becoming the focus of my thoughts. If you really have a chicken bone lodged in your throat, get medical attention. You will really piss me off if I have to send flowers to your funeral. I am broke at the moment.

I have heard stories about people who got bones stuck in their throats. One of the guys died. That give you a sense of urgency?

And if the bone somehow gets past your gullet, there's always the possiblity of it piercing your stomach or intestine. I'd say any of the above are far worse than a few minutes of discomfort at the doctor's office. Go with the doctor option.

Anyone with pets will recall that veterinarians say not to give chicken bones to dogs or cats, as they splinter and leave sharp points that can do a lot of damage and cause a lot of pain.

What I don't understand is why anyone wouldn't go to a doctor in this case. !!??

My elderly neighbor managed to get a bit of a walnut in her lung, and she coughed miserably for months. (Her stupid doctor wouldn't believe her.) Finally she coughed it up, but what scarring may have occurred?

See if you can't get it out.

We tried to get her to change doctors, but at age 85 she was resistant to change.

Thanks again for answers.

I will not die because of this, I am sure. Its not a big 5 centimeters chickenbone, but only a small piece of a bone. Maybe its less than 0,5 cm in diameter or length. So these "You are close to death"-statements some of you have had are exaggerations.

The worst that can happen to me, is that the piece gets loose and enters one of the lounges. Or an infection.

I have had it for 4 days now. So maybe its time to go to a doctor, because it doesnt go out, whatever I eat.

i once got a hellascious (sp?) throat infection when a small grass seed
got stuck in my throat...when it pierced the skin it made a place where
infection could get in....it cost a lot in terms of pain and suffering,
and anti biotics to cure the infection...what were you doing eating chicken bones, any way? What makes you think this is a medical acvice site?

I don't know about chicken bones but I do know that if you get a FISH bone stuck in the throat they tell you to sip lemon juice. Softens the bone so that bread will easily take it down.

I just read that really boiling chicken bones will soften them. So I'd think that about an hour of gargling with extremely hot water should do the trick in an hour or so.

Pray to St. Basil. We used to have a fine Catholic ceremony on Feb 2 and of course they don't seem to have it any more..but they crossed candles and put them against your throat in the hopes that you wouldn't choke on fish bones specifically, seeing as we usually ate fish on Fridays..and other throat conditions. Cross two candles, put them on your throat (they were white) and pray to St. Basil...after you have seen the doctor of course. It was such a sensible ceremony and actually worked because we never choked. mg

Cooked chicken bones if eaten by a dog will spinter into sharp spikes that can easily kill a dog from internal piercings.

swallowing a teeny one is probably OK but since one can only assume it is a chicken bone in the throat the possiblility remains that it could be something else....
