Hi! Does anyone have the French words now sung for the song variously entitled :

Hippe Taiaud / Hip et Taiaut / Hippy Ti-Yo

(I believe it originally came from "They Stole My Sled" / Il La Volet Mon Trancas" by Cleoma Falcon in the 30s ...)

Thanks.

Cheers! R-J

Did a search on this site but came up zilch. Otherwise a good selection of cajun lyrics.

My local contact for this stuff, who sings that song, is away in France just now, but will get lyrics from him when he returns if still needed.

Copied from an article from the Lafayette, LA Daily Advertiser:
Clifton Chenier Put Zydeco Music on the Map

[Rich-joy: Is this where you got your information?]
It was on May 11, 1965 ... that Clifton and Cleveland Chenier entered the Gold Star studio, in Houston. The tape rolling, the brothers shared a few words in Creole French. ... Then the pair, backed by drummer Madison Guidry, launched into what would become Chenier's signature piece, Zydeco Sont pas Salé. On it, Chenier strips down his piano accordion and treats it like a single-key button model. ... Over his mighty rhythm he sings some lines about two mischievous dogs named Hip and Taiaut that date back to a 1934 Cajun record by Joseph and Cléoma Falcon, Ils la volet man trancas (They Stole My Sled). ... Chenier couples the old song with. ... lines about snap beans.

O Maman! Quoi elle va faire avec le nègre?
Zydeco est pas salé; zydeco est pas salé.
T'as volé mon traîneau; t'as volé mon traîneau.
Regarde Hip et Taiaut; regarde Hip et Taiaut.

Oh Mama! What's she going to do with the Negro?
The snap beans aren't salty; the snap beans aren't salty.
You stole my sled; you stole my sled.
Look at Hip and Taiaut; look at Hip and Taiaut.

Subject: Lyr Add: ZYDECO SONT PAS SALÉ
From: Jim Dixon

Copied from a German site called CAJUN & ZYDECO. Website der CAJUN PIONEERS. (Ain't the Internet wonderful? Who would have guessed you could find Cajun music in Germany?)

ZYDECO SONT PAS SALÉ

Hé Maman! O Maman!
Zydeco est pas salé, Zydeco est pas salé
Ca a volé mon traineau, ca a volé mon traineau

Hippi Taiau, however spelled, is not Zydeco Sont pas Salé.
That is a completely different tune, sorry.
I am still waiting return of "he who knows" in order to obtain lyrics to this one.

Hipi Tiyo and Zydeco sont pas sales(sorry, cant do the accent on the e) are two semi-different songs that share lyrics and structure.
HtHe zydeco song is basically the black version, and Hipi Tiyo is the white. here is a possible set of words(they can vary enormously).

HIPI TIYO
C'est les Hipi Tiyo Tiyo Tiyo
Qu'a vole(ay) mon traineau traineau trainea
Quand t'as vu j'etais chaud cher
T'as ramene(ay) mon traineau
C'set les hipi tiyo tiyo tiyo
Qu'a vole(ay) mon capot capot capot
Quand t'as vu j'etais chaud cher
T'as ramene(ay) mon capot

C'est les filles de Bosco chere
Qu'a vole mon gilet chere
Quand tas vu j'etais chaud chere
T'as ramene mon gilet
C'est less filles de Bosco Bosco Bosco
Qu'as vole mon chapeau chere
Quand t'as vu j'etais chaud chere
T'as ramene mon chapeau

Hey Ma
Zydeco sont pas sales(ay)
Zydeco sont pas sale(ay)
Zydeco sont pas sale(ay)
Et les Hipi Tiyo Tiyo Tiyo
Qu'ont vole mon traineau traineau trainea
Quand a vu j'etais chaud chere
Sont ramene mon traineau

(I've put sale(ay) because I cant write the accent. Salay is the rough pronunciation).
Hipi Tiyo may(or may not) be a corruption of "huppe(ay) taiauts". Huppe being a clloquial word for clever, and Taiaut(Tiyo) a cajun version of the English Tallyho, and used here to mean "hound-dog". I am indebted to raymon Francois for this explanation, but he points out that other meanings are possible. It's basically incomprehensible nonsense(like many folksongs!)

Greg beat me to it, as I was sadly away for a fortnight in Lafayette!
While I was there, I bought "The Yellow Book" Ye Yaille, Chere, which contains lyrics to oodles of Cajun stuff, so the trip was not entirely a waste of time............(Oh, the irony of it all)
