Subject: New fiddle - what's the tube for ? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 07 Apr 04 - 05:00 PM I've just got a new fiddle and inside the case there is an empty 60cm long x 1cm diameter clear plastic tube with black, removable end caps. Inside the lid of the case there are two clips to hold the tube. Any ideas on what this is for? Doug C |

Subject: RE: New fiddle - what's the tube for ? From: wysiwyg Date: 07 Apr 04 - 05:16 PM Hardi's luthier sells strings from a bulk pack he gets in a bigger-diameter tube-- a specially-put together set where 3 strings are one brand and the fourth is another. They don't come wound into anything that would fit in a square paper packet like guitar strings; if he were not putting them on right away for you, you would need a tube like that to take them home in. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: New fiddle - what's the tube for ? From: Sorcha Date: 07 Apr 04 - 07:52 PM Yes. If it were only say, about 4"long, I would say a humidfier tube, but that long has to be for strings. |

Subject: RE: New fiddle - what's the tube for ? From: GUEST Date: 08 Apr 04 - 05:34 AM Strings- some string companies don't reccommend winding strings round in a loop cos they reckon it damages them... and who are we to argue? |

Subject: RE: New fiddle - what's the tube for ? From: GUEST Date: 08 Apr 04 - 09:19 AM Modern strings do not need much tensioning. I have watched a soloist experience a broken string in mid concert and replace it in not much more time than it takes to cough with embarrassment. A cautionary note when buying new, unwound strings. Don't bring along your old tube with some spares still inside it. It looks suspicious when you go to the pay desk. You feel like bank robber, even if nobody accuses you. If you are buying a complete set, they probably come in a new tube anyway. |

Subject: RE: New fiddle - what's the tube for ? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 09 Apr 04 - 02:56 AM It's difficult to measure the length of the strings when they're wrapped around the pegs but I guess they would fit into the tube. I have bought strings in the past and I'm sure that they came wound up in square paper envelopes I can't come up with any other use for it so I'll go along with it being a string holder. Thanks for your ideas. Doug C |

Subject: RE: New fiddle - what's the tube for ? From: Oaklet Date: 09 Apr 04 - 11:12 AM I think it is a tube for keeping a rolled-up print of Judith Chalmers in. At least that's what I use mine for. |
